Good morning!

individuals and organizations to document their communities to be part of
our national collections. Register for a webinar on application and program
guidelines *tomorrow at 4 pm EST *here:

Applications are
due September 7th!
*The American Folklife Center Community Collections Grants Program*
As part of the Mellon Foundation-funded Library of Congress initiative, *Of
the People: Widening the Path*, each year over the course of 3 years, the
American Folklife Center (AFC) will be inviting applications for up to 10
grants of up to $50,000 each to support contemporary cultural documentation
on the culture and traditions of diverse communities across the United
States ($60,000 if applicants intend to host a public program in their
community), and will support projects of up to 12-months in length.. These
projects can span up to twelve months, and will result in archival
collections preserved at the AFC and made accessible through the Library of
Congress’ web site (as well as remain with source communities and
organizations).
The major goals of this grant program are to support communities in
documenting their cultural life and experiences from their own
perspectives, while enriching the Library’s holdings with diverse materials
featuring knowledge and creativity found at the local level. As such,
successful applications will come from individuals or small organizations
closely affiliated with the community and traditions they propose to
document.
To be eligible, projects must involve *new, original* field research and
documentation of contemporary cultural life and activities from communities
within the U.S. Funding through these grants can be used to cover travel,
equipment rental or purchase, and other expenses associated with cultural
documentation fieldwork. If needed, AFC staff will provide consultation and
training in ethnographic research/documentation and archives methods.
As reflected by its archival collections and public programs, the AFC views
cultural diversity through a broad lens, such as in terms of race,
ethnicity, gender, religion, occupation, and class (and intersections
thereof).
*Important dates and resources*
Applications are due* September 7th, 2021* by noon EST. All application
materials must be sent via email to AFC-grants at loc.gov for consideration.
