Hello valiant Intellectual Freedom Fighters!
The Oregon Library Association Intellectual Freedom Committee currently has two open positions and is seeking new members. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about intellectual freedom and eager to support and advocate for the intellectual freedom needs of Oregon libraries, especially in a time of unprecedented challenges.
To apply, please send a Letter of Interest (no longer than 1 page) to Perry Stokes and Emily O’Neal, the current Co-Chairs of the committee, at ifc.chair at olaweb.org. Please include information about: the areas of intellectual freedom that interest you, your availability to participate in committee work, and the work and life experience which you would bring to the committee. We especially encourage people from historically underrepresented groups and non-represented regions (See current member map) to apply. The application deadline is Sunday, Sep 11, 2022 at 11:59 PM (Pacific Time).
The Intellectual Freedom Committee is a 9-member standing OLA committee with the charge of supporting the library community's commitment to the freedom to read, open access to information, and other intellectual freedom issues throughout the state. Ongoing projects of the committee include:
• supporting Banned Books Week;
• sponsoring sessions at the OLA conference on IF issues;
• supporting libraries that receive intellectual freedom challenges including to materials and other IF issues;
• providing information on IF issues through listserv communication, social media, web tool kits, and other resources;
• providing a searchable database of news reports related to intellectual freedom issues in Oregon;
• honoring Intellectual Freedom Champions;
• working with the Legislative Committee and the OLA Board on topical issues that arise, such as net neutrality.
Members are asked to serve at least two years. The IFC meets approximately six times a year, plus a short meeting at the OLA annual conference. Committee members participate remotely, either via Zoom or conference call. Applicants must be available to attend Friday 9:30 – 11:30 AM (Pacific Time) meetings.
If you have any questions about the committee, please feel free to contact us!
