INTERNET- Choosing How Your URL Displays When Copied

Intermediate

[URL]

Boy, was I surprised the other day! I was putting a link into an email (you know, the long type with lots of letters, numbers and symbols), and it didn't show up correctly! Well, technically it was the right link, but it looked strange ... it had real words and spaces! It was, in fact, what the webmaster had titled that page.

So instead of seeing something like this:

I actually saw:

Tiger Woods to return to PNC Championship with son, Charlie (msn.com)<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.net%2Ftn.jsp%3Ff%3D001e7rAsJzIZKlM12ihK2aSfhAwmWl-j3L8e-zsbAK6ubokRsialWPLS8mpcqH5GY1JOInyTcrqJdO-oVSpjI-v_g3eIW-fRsMaf1wVATlArwan_CCm-Fx66P-CSM4Xe9UkfqICxAlOUgAyM4yyztfLiu5VUPU_XOs_fWAU225H9BbSrK8taUOcNG1jfutPYzvNocMOI4_ajRqW323wMoVxDYJfhZKZyom85b7TKF_UEueaCq-OduWkQ93c0tIUnN4lQg5eSMKxKoRI00RcPNEtcW5gIYrUtGIsoV4Fog83SMUYNrmNFaZyjqOIBaDtJ5ac7Us10p_Q97QTCmeotWaNXRX0n4U9Sqsf%26c%3DQn6WYgWRasX61hLwo1azyRNktmuw0gQGllYS7Mi147R52pea2KlyUw%3D%3D%26ch%3DFn0tV79Q1-OtgrbjX8JNaDclmQnu9qoPynNJlQWqt-ODhn9XH6M5zA%3D%3D&data=05%7C01%7CDarci.HANNING%40slo.oregon.gov%7C61b68b05768e4100261b08dae859dd73%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C638077769914904870%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=Dguy%2FmFFAPdJAc0torohllKOUOhPQ9My4r3P6Da0a8k%3D&reserved=0>

Now, maybe you actually like the switch, which is fine. Sometimes this version of the link works really well. But if you don't like it, there is a way to change this default setting. (See instructions below.)

NOTE: This feature happens only if...

1. You are in Microsoft's Edge browser. (So far, Firefox and Chrome do not offer this feature.)

2. You are copying the URL from the browser to another location (email, web page, Word/G-Docs document, PPT/G-slide and more.

Here's Another Example

The link I copied looked like this:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/ios-16-cheat-sheet-your-complete-guide-to-the-iphone-update<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.net%2Ftn.jsp%3Ff%3D001e7rAsJzIZKlM12ihK2aSfhAwmWl-j3L8e-zsbAK6ubokRsialWPLS8mpcqH5GY1JHMp8NWtFh6yAUjxRbPsHMzzNKU2gnj7LodHUZLVr-lUly4oIbh4u567LTDwyEjIV4qH5o6dFrFvnyi6yc0WSYS4lvm2C0Vx3yv7NjN90VLQR8Ox5yJbPMFJD5rZL3BceBcz4t_9uT-lYpeWYAIbc3BgA5loSQwVVXKWQbI-dde1hCDLBEmfkJ8eAQrLqtd5BFt-F1rns0W28Cdc6fRQybrxwjh44ZwgDdcFLdnVnN54G6yYUP4U_dff5YhE6R-AD4eX-Aln1LrCTll6-TF2wrZO62tZjT8b19alemfZkXOw%3D%26c%3DQn6WYgWRasX61hLwo1azyRNktmuw0gQGllYS7Mi147R52pea2KlyUw%3D%3D%26ch%3DFn0tV79Q1-OtgrbjX8JNaDclmQnu9qoPynNJlQWqt-ODhn9XH6M5zA%3D%3D&data=05%7C01%7CDarci.HANNING%40slo.oregon.gov%7C61b68b05768e4100261b08dae859dd73%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C638077769914904870%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=%2BZDntX%2F7O6W1tQrNWTk7WDV9WjhcdEhKJU7z7fAf6%2Fo%3D&reserved=0>

When I pasted it in the document it was changed to the article title which is:

iOS 16 Cheat Sheet: Your Complete Guide to the iPhone Update (msn.com)<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.net%2Ftn.jsp%3Ff%3D001e7rAsJzIZKlM12ihK2aSfhAwmWl-j3L8e-zsbAK6ubokRsialWPLS8mpcqH5GY1JHMp8NWtFh6yAUjxRbPsHMzzNKU2gnj7LodHUZLVr-lUly4oIbh4u567LTDwyEjIV4qH5o6dFrFvnyi6yc0WSYS4lvm2C0Vx3yv7NjN90VLQR8Ox5yJbPMFJD5rZL3BceBcz4t_9uT-lYpeWYAIbc3BgA5loSQwVVXKWQbI-dde1hCDLBEmfkJ8eAQrLqtd5BFt-F1rns0W28Cdc6fRQybrxwjh44ZwgDdcFLdnVnN54G6yYUP4U_dff5YhE6R-AD4eX-Aln1LrCTll6-TF2wrZO62tZjT8b19alemfZkXOw%3D%26c%3DQn6WYgWRasX61hLwo1azyRNktmuw0gQGllYS7Mi147R52pea2KlyUw%3D%3D%26ch%3DFn0tV79Q1-OtgrbjX8JNaDclmQnu9qoPynNJlQWqt-ODhn9XH6M5zA%3D%3D&data=05%7C01%7CDarci.HANNING%40slo.oregon.gov%7C61b68b05768e4100261b08dae859dd73%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C638077769914904870%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=%2BZDntX%2F7O6W1tQrNWTk7WDV9WjhcdEhKJU7z7fAf6%2Fo%3D&reserved=0>

What You Can Do

There are several options you have with this feature.

1. You might think, "Wow, that's cool. I like it. This makes long and ugly URLs easier to view." That's the default setting in Edge, so you're fine.

2. If you want (in this one case) to paste the actual URL instead, you can right-click and choose to "paste as plain text" and the link will appear as you saw it originally.

3. Or, if you think, "I really don't like this change. I want links to always appear as I've copied them," you can change the default setting.

Change the Edge Setting for Showing Links

TIP: Make sure you are signed into your Microsoft account so that whether you're using Edge at home or at work, this setting change is applied to your MS profile.

To make changes to how Edge handles copied Internet page links:

· With an Edge browser open, click the three horizontal dots in the upper right corner and select Settings from the drop-down menu.

· In the Settings panel on the left select Share, copy and paste.

· In the URL copy & paste format default window, click on the Plain text box to select it (instead of Link) so that when you copy a URL it will paste the link and not the page title.

[Edge settings]

Now future copied links will appear as the full URL rather than the title.

NOTE: There are exceptions. Some apps could ignore the enhanced copy-and-paste feature and paste only the web address.

Communications: Grammar

Should it be plural?

Here is what I find myself doing rather frequently: I use a singular linking verb (is instead of are) when coupled with a contraction.

Here's some examples of what I mean.

Did you catch it? It should have been "Here are some examples ...." (Or Here're)

Here're several more incorrect statements:

· There's a lot of problems with that idea.
· Here's the groceries.
· Where's the spoons?

Looking up this habit online, it seems that the use of 's for these situations, while technically incorrect, is gaining in popular accepted use.

What do you prefer? What do you find yourself saying naturally?

Leadership & Success

Build Success Patterns

“We know what is good for our employees. We have their best interests at heart.”

While this statement may sound great, the attitude of a benevolent manager is not one of inclusion, nor is it particularly respectful.

Rather than ask the employee to weigh in on decisions that affect him or her, the people are moved around and "done for" instead of being "worked with."

Certainly, there are times when management knows best because of greater insight and perspective ... and needs to make a benevolent decision. Just as a parent, some actions need to be done for, not with, an employee. Used as the exception, not the rule, this approach has value.

True Story

Gary worked for a Fortune 50 corporation in the internal audit and operational analysis department. Teams were sent across the nation, with only 24 hours notice. Individuals were pulled from one project and put on another without being consulted.

Yes, the executive view of what needed to be done was vital. But Gary felt like a pawn instead of a valued employee. His voice was never heard. He was just told, "We know what is best for you. We have your career in mind as we schedule projects." He was expected to do what he was directed, trusting in their benevolence.

After Note: So far we have described three of the four modes a manager (or supervisor) can be in: autocratic, democratic, and now benevolent. Next week we'll talk about the fourth and which one should predominate for greater success.
