Empathetic Librarianship Practices

This course incorporates empathetic practices used in a library setting to engage and connect users. Mastering these practices with diverse populations is a major focus. Topics include best practices to build empathy skills, such as cultural humility, person-in-environment, and creating an empathetic philosophy of librarianship and other user interaction focuses. The library is a place that features many social and cultural differences, diverse patrons, and all ages. Understanding differences and addressing the needs of all users can be challenging. Being mindful of the obstacles library users face in their daily lives is vital. Using proven, best, high yield practices and a structured empathetic approach with all patrons can change the culture of the library. We will explore many proven strategies that lead toward more empathetic exchanges with all patrons and staff.

Instructor: Keith Rocci, Distance Education Library Department Head at Pima Community College in Arizona, adjunct professor at SLIM.
