Newberg Library Director Will Worthey was hired on Wednesday, May 18th as Newberg City Manager after a competitive hiring process. Will was appointed Acting City Manager by council in November 2021. During Will’s time as Newberg’s Library Director from July 2019 to November 2021 he overhauled the library financials, creating a streamlined and transparent process, and managed a major reorganization of adult nonfiction, swapping the whole collection, front to back, with no mistakes thanks to his detailed planning and precise execution. During the early stages of the pandemic Will pivoted the library during the early complete closure to help with “Newberg Mask Force,” helping the community create masks for first responders and essential city employees. The library staff also created hand sanitizer during the initial shortage to be used for city employees. He continually led the library by pivoting to meet the needs of the community during the pandemic while working to keep staff safe and morale boosted.

During Will’s short time in Newberg he worked relentlessly to end the “library desert” surrounding Newberg’s neighboring city of Dundee and the surrounding rural area outside Newberg. Thanks to Will’s work with CCRLS Director John Hunter and support from the State Library of Oregon’s Buzzy Nielsen, the 40+ year problem was resolved, bringing library service to a previously unserved population. Will’s dedication brought him to the attention of Newberg City Council, and when the former City Manager left, Will was the choice of City Council to lead the City as Acting City Manager. In the last 6 months Will’s leadership in Newberg has strengthened the city. At the request of many city employees, department heads, and city leadership, Will agreed to apply for the position of City Manager.

At the library we are grateful for such strong library commitment from our new City Manager, and we will also miss Will has our Library Director. In June recruitment will begin for a new library director for Newberg. If you would like to join me in wishing Will Worthey well in his next endeavor, you can email him at will.worthey at newbergoregon.gov<mailto:will.worthey at newbergoregon.gov>

Thank you,
Korie
