INTERNET - Did You Know Microsoft Edge Could Do This?

Intermediate

Everyone has their favorite browser to get to the Internet, right? You may use Google's Chrome, Mozilla's Firefox or Microsoft's Edge. Honestly, I prefer Chrome because I use Gmail and Google calendar and have these two tabs open all day as I'm working.

[Edge tricks]

However, I'm starting to use Microsoft Edge more now as I keep learning new tips that make it fun and productive.

I recently discovered three features that are built right into the Edge browser. These tips make it: 1) easier to read content on a web page, 2) faster to screenshot an item that you are viewing, and 3) a way to find deals when shopping online – right in the browser!

Three Powerful Microsoft Edge Tips

You probably know that Microsoft replaced the "Internet Explorer" web browser and re-branded it as "Edge." This program is usually installed on any Windows computer by the manufacturer, but if you don't have it, you can download it here.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001smtRQWG-N31FWXK921NqgJTQBMUfVJK0IAjig5O7QyDzIqET4F0gdETJaiwue4S4UpsTqj7ZC4plPLc1MBBsyK4tkqfxBmrdN6w-4_a6Jc-YXqsaeZv07PZ8MJHWLjSYxpHn71PQ1xAbuuDaKCEKVdl2760UQCLt&c=n0dU2lXF18OvWpXyvhpwp33Jx3nDbOBEOIcXNdY_9hy2zMAaR844Uw==&ch=WFE4OgXE716t7YjGsvb8yx6afXLBOH7zIZil7e22MQJHSXW-UrSAkg==>

When you're viewing website pages using Edge, there are new enhancements right inside the browser. You don't need to install additional software or add an extension. These three tips are part of the new Edge!

1. Remove Ads While Viewing Pages

[no ads]

Yes, you read that right, you can get rid of annoying ads! When you're reading an article, blog post or just viewing a website page, sometimes there are ads on the page or they pop up and get in your way.

Well, when you use Microsoft Edge to view a page you can push the F9 key one time and it will remove the ads!

You see, F9 puts the window in "Reader mode" and Edge retrieves the original webpage over a secure connection and simplifies it to make it easier to read without ads getting in your way.

To go back to the regular view, press F9 again.

For example, I was viewing this article, but there were a lot of distracting ads on the page, as you can see!

[remove ads]

When I pressed F9, the ads went away! I was now viewing the page in "Reader Mode."

2. Screenshot a Section of a Page (or the Whole Scrolling Window)

You may have a snipping tool or use a program like SnagIt when you need a screenshot of what you're viewing on a website page. However, in the new Edge, Microsoft built one right into the browser!

When you're viewing something on your screen in Edge that you want to capture, press the Control key, the Shift key and the "S" key (Ctrl + Shift + S) and the capture options will open. (TIP: Remember that "S" stands for "snipping")

Or, in the top right corner, click the three horizontal dots and select Web Capture.

A window will open and you'll choose from three capture types:

[capture]

1. Capture area – Select the part of the page you want.
2. Capture full page – The full (scrolling page) is copied.
3. Web select – This lets you copy the content of the page without any formatting.

For each of these three options, after you've pressed Ctrl + Shift + S to open the snipping tool (or Web Capture from settings), you can do one of three things:

1. To Capture an area:
· Drag the mouse over the area you want to capture on the page. It will be highlighted.
· When you release the mouse a menu will open showing Copy, Markup capture or Visual search.

[copy]

· Copy puts it on your clipboard so you can Paste the image in a variety of places – like a Word Doc or PowerPoint. NOTE: There is no "save as", so you need to retrieve what you copied from your clipboard. (Tech-Talk article on using your "clipboard history" with multiple entries.) <https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001smtRQWG-N31FWXK921NqgJTQBMUfVJK0IAjig5O7QyDzIqET4F0gdGZpJdtN9_idJ84hy0ZYOvFqx43Gv3NHyxRkTLIOPXnzNmGeesub6y2Iact4v_9hwZqWMP4EEWdC4MFh59x7ZuilYlxJNIeSXklh9vYT4vPIhsGLDObALSF8cYw1PI4QySQRC8M8uBYbGa9JgsrDHTM=&c=n0dU2lXF18OvWpXyvhpwp33Jx3nDbOBEOIcXNdY_9hy2zMAaR844Uw==&ch=WFE4OgXE716t7YjGsvb8yx6afXLBOH7zIZil7e22MQJHSXW-UrSAkg==>

· If you choose Markup capture, the image will open in a new window with options to Draw, Erase, Share, Copy and Save (as in the image below). In the example below, see the red line added to emphasize the word "achieve". Here you can save the image to your files.

· Visual search will show you similar images to the one that you captured. Not sure yet how this will be helpful, but it is certainly interesting. Try it!

2. The Capture Full page option will take a picture of the full, scrolling page and open it in the edit window so that you can draw, erase, share or copy as needed. Even if you don't want to make changes to the image, you can save the entire page. That can be quite handy.

3. Web Select lets you "encircle" text and images that you see on the Edge browser page and then paste it into another application. In this case, what you select does not constitute a "copy", but rather a temporary identification of something that you must then paste somewhere to keep it. NOTE: Do this before you click on anything again.

3. View the Price History of a Product and Get Coupons

Now if you use the Edge browser when shopping online, you can get help saving money! You don't need to leave the product page to get coupons and see the price history and comparisons. It all happens in the Edge sidebar.

[coupon icon]
· When shopping online and viewing a product page, in the Edge browser click the coupon icon in the top right of the browser. NOTE: If you're not viewing a product you most likely won't see the coupon icon in the top of the browser, however, the "shopping" icon should be in the right panel of the browser page (unless it is turned off, see below).

· A sidebar will open on the right side of the screen with sections that show you (be sure to scroll down):

· The product's price history

· Coupons (if available)

· Product comparisons, deals, rewards

· and more!

[pricing tab]

[toggle on]

NOTE: You need to have the shopping icon turned ON to use it. If you don't see it in the right panel, click the plus (+) sign in the Edge right panel, go to the Manage section, and toggle ON the Shopping option.

BONUS! Communications: Writing

When to Use a "Call to Action"

Just what in the world is a "call to action" and why should we use it a lot more frequently than we do?

It's amazing how human beings so often require a little nudge to do things ... and how simple that can be. Using action words like "go to", "download", or "visit" can make a big difference in your results. The list of choices for a call to action statement are endless:
· "look at"
· "reply to"
· "click here"
· "try this" ... and so on.

In other words, instead of saying "Here is a Young Adult reading guide for you", change it to "Download this guide to Young Adult reading" if you want more folks to actually get the document.

Where Can You Put a Call to Action?

Typically, we think of putting a "call to action" statement on a text link or a button in posts and web pages. There are so many possible places we tend to overlook when it comes to adding one. Here are a few suggestions you may not have considered.

· Infographics
· Email notes
· Reports
· Presentations
· Book reviews
· Employee handbook

Not Just for "Clicking"

"Call to Actions" don't have to go to a particular URL; they are not just for selling or directing online activity. You can use them to get your ideas across!

The call for action could be a desired physical or mental activity. For instance...

· Think about this ....
· Read a story every night...
· Ponder the pros and cons of...
· Hop on your bike...
· Spread the word...
· Share it on social media...
· Look inward... (you get the idea, right?)

Think, "What do I want the listener, the reader to do?" Then tell them!
