[Libs-Or] Join the Internet Archive's Community History Web Archiving Program!

Hello to colleagues across the state,

I'd like to add my voice here to recommend this program to any public library that is considering applying for Community Webs.


 Cedar Mill & Bethany Community Libraries<https://archive-it.org/home/cedarmillbethanylibraries>, located in suburban Portland, are a current participant in this Internet Archive-based program. Since 2021, staff have learned about web archiving using Archive-It through training, peer support, and hands-on work. Our project scope is focused on our very local news and land use planning in our neighborhood<https://archive-it.org/home/cedarmillbethanylibraries>, but the program supports all sorts of projects. You can start small, or dream big 🙂



It would be great to see more Oregon institutions involved in this effort. It’s open to not just public libraries, but many small and large cultural institutions. The Internet Archive is currently accepting applications from public libraries in Oregon to join Community Webs<https://communitywebs.archive-it.org/index.html>, our Community History Web Archiving Program. Community Webs is fully funded with generous support from the Mellon Foundation. There is no cost to participating organizations.

Community Webs seeks to empower public libraries to build community-focused archives of websites, social media and other web content documenting local histories and voices that are typically underrepresented in the historic record. We currently have over 100 participating libraries from across the US; however, Oregon is not yet represented.

Organizations that join before April 2023 will receive free web archiving services and technical support via a multi-year subscription to Archive-It, professional development stipends totalling $2,200, and funded travel to a daylong Community Webs meeting later this year.
