INTERNET – Essential (and easy) Internet Keyboard Shortcuts

Intermediate

[keyboard shortcut]

We all have our favorite shortcuts to get our work done faster. One that I use all the time when working on the Internet and need to find a word (or phrase) on the page I'm viewing quickly is Ctrl + F. This opens up a window so that I can type in what I'm looking for and jump to it quickly.

If you spend a lot of time on the Internet there are many keyboard shortcuts that can help move around a page quickly, manage tabs, refresh the screen… and other useful tasks.

We've compiled a list of popular functions. If these are a refresher for you, great! But if they're brand new, like learning anything, you might want to practice them several times so that you get the feel for each and engrain them in your brain. If you do, they will be second nature.

Internet Browser Keyboard Shortcuts

By the way, these shortcuts are universal -- so if you use Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Mozilla Firefox, they will work in each browser.

Keyboard Shortcut

Action it Does

Tabs

Ctrl+ T

Opens a New Tab (when you have a browser window open)

Ctrl + W

Closes the Tab that you are viewing

Ctrl + Shift + T

If you accidentally close a Tab, this will open the previously closed one (even in a prior browser session)

Zooming

Ctrl and +

Zoom IN on a page

Ctrl and Mousewheel Up

Zoom IN on a page

Ctrl and -

Zoom OUT on a page

Ctrl and Mousewheel Down

Ctrl + L (or F6 key)

Ctrl + D

Opens the Bookmark menu so that you can bookmark the current page

Print & Save

Ctrl + P

Opens the Print window

Ctrl + S

Allows you to Save the page as a document to your computer.

Getting Around the Page

TIP: These also work in MS Office!

Page Down button

Scroll down a frame of the page

Page Up button

Scroll up a frame of the page

Home key

Takes you back to the top of the page

End

Takes you to the bottom of the page

As you can see, some of the shortcuts are easier to remember because the letter and the function match, like Ctrl + P (for Print) or Ctrl + T (for new Tab).

Start using a few of your favorites so that you can recall and use them frequently.

TIP: For Windows, highlighting and formatting shortcuts, see this Tech-Talk article<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001974VADqQrQwuxusXrd9q1ioxwPItlbJSep-a6NGu8_uaKZArj3azMpSUCwg2kpy9uRNLGMomgNV5mlAP-EhxstFHECYeRW4e9tEp9epRxgBRbSXbvpmXYb3F2y9AwYPZXBSh-L6hIN8Jp7LBjJNa1_mWNdMz7l7kQGWnmj27RgOwZ3r2um_NLTlhgrUcw1-Y&c=L-3xCibM_AfexnTrzbbT9uzCg_X4YlfK2N4d5fXU5N9JnHilttHaCA==&ch=RY2zCjMYVW-3AobprdlYhyP0YraC_txRht78nvsK8_tEgUYtHAqpsQ==>.

Communications: Self

Start each wishful thought with "thank you"

You're at work and you have a potentially uncomfortable conversation that needs to be had with a colleague.

You may be thinking of one or more of these ideas...

· "Oh, this is going to be tough."
· "I hope this is going to go well."
· "I really want this to go smoothly."

The bottom two are more positive, which is always good, because how you think very often shapes your results.

But here's a new trick that takes this idea to a whole new level!

Start each wishful thought with the words thank you ... before it has happened.

· "Thank you for having a great conversation."
· "Thank you for our talk going so well."
· "Thank you for a smooth chat where everything worked out."

You can see (and feel) the difference, right?

RESULT: You then have the conversation, and because you were thankful in advance for it being a positive outcome, it's much more likely to be so!

This same technique works wonders for every hope, want, or need you can think of. When, in your mind, you start to worry ... think thank you for a positive outcome. You'll immediately feel better. If you desire something, say to yourself, thank you for it ... and keep thinking thank you until it becomes a reality.
