Here's hoping that if you've been affected by the winter storms, you have power and heat and are safe.

National News Literacy Week<https://newslit.org/news-literacy-week/> is an annual initiative organized by staff at the News Literacy Project<https://newslit.org/about/> and the E.W. Scripps Company. This year it runs January 22-26.

Of note are four virtual events that are aimed at middle school and high school students and educators, and for two of those sessions, also the general public. Registration is free, and links to recordings will be sent to registrants.

  * Tuesday, January 23 (10 am Pacific) - Behind the Scenes with The Washington Post TikTok Team<https://newslitproject.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_lEcIxDK5QViB7ax9nfSg_Q?_x_zm_rtaid=PBnLLEa4RL6ZEGvSd09d_Q.1705444530526.46d1a8edf724ad66c53a8844d986d465&_x_zm_rhtaid=874#/registration> (for students and educators)
  * Wednesday, January 24 (2 pm Pacific) - How Student Journalists Are Filling the Gap in Local News<https://newslitproject.zoom.us/webinar/register/1617030198153/WN_Xigcymb-T22wFlFtQo8GTA#/registration> (for everyone)
  * Thursday, January 25 (4 pm Pacific) - How to Find Local News You Can Trust<https://newslitproject.zoom.us/webinar/register/3317025779745/WN_e70VW8fnTQ6hN9xE2wyWBw#/registration> (for everyone)
  * Friday, January 26 (various sessions between 6 am and 2 pm Pacific) - NewsLitCamp: The Importance of Local News<https://www.eventbrite.com/e/national-newslitcamp-the-importance-of-local-news-tickets-759927492587?aff=oddtdtcreator> (for students and educators)

If you haven't explored the News Literacy Project website, educators may be interested in Checkology<https://get.checkology.org/> - an online learning platform with news literacy lessons for middle and high school students that requires free registration - while those who serve the public may want to share about RumorGuard<https://www.rumorguard.org/> - a website and email alert system that helps fight misinformation. That's just a starter; there are additional resources for each of the target audiences.

Please consider sharing this information with middle and high school teachers, library patrons, etc. Or, maybe you want to organize a watch party and discussion of a live or recorded event or find another way to promote news literacy, which overlaps with media literacy and information literacy.

Thanks,
Jen
