VIDEO - You Can Use Snagit to Make Videos

Intermediate

Do you use Snagit to take screen captures and edit images on your computer? Well, sometimes an picture isn't enough to provide directions, illustrate a problem, or create a tutorial. You need a video!

Did you know that you can also record videos to capture what is on your screen with Snagit? It not only takes screenshots but is a screen video recorder as well. And it's super-fast and easy.

[Screenshot of the Tech-Talk website showing a banner with text: "Everyone's Favorite Re1 Learning Space!" Additional text below reads: "Busy Professionals and Non-Techies of All Ages. Discover the Perfect Blend of Technology and Communications Skills to Be Productive at Work and Successful in Everyday Life!" There is a multimedia player below the text.]

NOTE: Not familiar with Snagit? It's software from the company TechSmith<https://opiayfbab.cc.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001eipT8Vj_CARr333kmsknZ8xsL0fxwVhu_9jtoSSBpkbHNuxRzP92-E36xKBD863EIzlvwg3rz2KaRDBpAMOzXgx_F9wITVycYkll5V1AU8DzEBX14GXccQxNboSQ4Ak7kgStalAUXyVhB0YjL0y9VmtCDJlZPg18amdOU5xAvP5uMYHfE_L_BA==&c=5lj2i22Vnd4HZu7qvDUuIETKZ2pbxIYMIXRhsDBV_Xg0HwYBbIkXBg==&ch=aAeU9kFmGNWjmTzEc-NI-enh_BB3O0Jm78IHrN3rLmiK0rO1eEh2fQ==>. Just go to Tech-Talk.com, search on "Snagit" and you'll find several articles and videos to get you started.

So… why would you want to record what you're seeing on your computer screen? There can be many situations in which a screen recording can be helpful! You can…

1. Document processes for your job responsibilities.
2. Capture something that may be wrong with your computer to send to your IT department.
3. Create a tutorial for co-workers.
4. Give project feedback to your team.

Think of how much time you can save by just recording a process instead of writing out the steps and adding images!

Snagit video will capture anything you're viewing on your screen including apps like Word, Excel, Google, website pages, web tools, and more.

The Video Process is Easy!

When recording with Snagit, you can ALSO...
· Choose to record Audio so that you can explain what's on the screen.
· Turn on your computer's camera to include your face in the recording (referred to as "picture-in-picture").
· Use the Screen Draw feature while recording to add arrows, shapes and step icons to clarify processes (see image below). NOTE: We will demonstrate this option in the upcoming webinar.

[A computer screenshot shows a web page titled "Featured Products" displaying three sections with images and text. Each section has a "Read More" button. Editing tools like crop, filter, and others are open on the side, indicating a screen capture in progress.]

Then, once your recording is complete, you can quickly...
· Edit out any unnecessary video.
· Download it to your computer.
· Share the video via a link, post to social media, upload to a web tool like Dropbox, and more.

Let's walk through the basic steps to record, edit and share.

Create a Video Screen Capture with Snagit

[Screenshot of a Windows Start menu showing selected applications: TechSmith, Camtasia 2023, Camtasia Recorder 2023, and Snagit 2023 highlighted with a red arrow pointing at Snagit 2023. The search bar at the bottom contains "Type here to search.]

First, open the Snagit APPLICATION by clicking the orange Snagit icon. If it's not in your TASK BAR you can find it in your list of apps when you go to the Windows icon in the bottom left of your toolbar.

In the Snagit window that opens (see image below), select the Video tab on the left. Now, in the middle section select from the options to:

1. Capture the Cursor in your video.
2. Record your Microphone (your voice speaking).
3. Record System Audio (the sounds that come from your computer).
4. Turn on your Webcam so that your face will show in the video (picture-in-picture).
5. Or toggle on the Screen Draw so that you can add arrows, boxes and numbered steps on the screen while recording.

NOTE: Any option that has a " > " symbol to the right of it gives you more choices like picking a cursor color or which audio or video input you prefer ... if you have more than one.

When you're ready to begin recording, in the Snagit capture window, click the red Capture circle button.

[A screenshot of a screen recording software interface. The Video tab is selected on the left. Options include Region selection, Preview in Editor, Capture Cursor, Record Microphone, Record System Audio, and Screen Draw. The Capture button is large and red on the right.]

· Click the Full Screen button at the top, or use the Crosshairs that will appear on your screen to select the area you want to record. Be sure to have all of the items you will be recording (Word Doc, website page, online tool, etc…) within the crosshairs area of your screen.

· Now the video recording toolbar will appear (as in the image below). You can move this off to the side or a different monitor. It reflects your choices in recording your audio narration, picture-in-picture, etc. You can make changes if needed and confirm the audio and video options.

[A screenshot showing a user interface panel with various control buttons: a red record button, a muted microphone icon, a green speaker button, a green microphone button, numerical values "2020 x 1254," a camera icon, a circular arrow for refresh, and a white X for close.]

· With settings confirmed, click the red Record button on the left. You'll get a "3, 2, 1" countdown before the recording starts.

· The timer will display the length of the recording.

· During your screen recording you can press the Pause button if you need to temporarily stop the recording.

· If you want to start over, press Restart and the recording will start all over from the beginning.

· Or to Cancel completely, click the X.

· When finished, click the blue Stop button.

[A recording toolbar interface with buttons labeled Stop Recording, Pause, Toggle Video On/Off, Restart Recording, and Cancel Recording. The toolbar displays a recording timer showing 00:00:22.]

Make Any Edits Needed

Once you click the Stop button, the video will open in the Snagit Editor.

· You can Preview your recording with the video control bar at the bottom of the screen.

· To Edit out a section, drag the green or red handles to the right or left to select the section (it will turn blue) and then click the Cut button to remove that section.

[A screenshot of a video editing interface is shown. It includes a timeline with blue, green, and red markers. There are play, pause, and skip buttons, volume control, and options to export the video as a GIF or PNG. A "Cut" and "Cancel" option is also visible.]

[Screenshot of a software interface showing options to share captures via various platforms. A red arrow points to the "Share Link" button at the top. Below, options include Screencast, Knowmia, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, Dropbox, YouTube, Twitter, Panopto, File, and Email.]
Download or Share Your Video

When you're finished with the editing, either:

· Use the Share link button in the upper right of the screen to create a link to give to others.

· Click the drop-down arrow in the Share link button to Download the MP4 video to your computer, or Save to another platform (Google Drive, Dropbox)

· Or Share via other popular platforms as seen in the image to the right.

There are more options to annotate important parts of your video, combine clips, blur part of your video screen, and more. Communication: Writing

Formula for a successful complaint letter

I recently moved to a new state and found myself exploring a quaint town. Having found a safe parking spot on a side road, I proceeded to walk around and have lunch.

Much to my surprise, when I came back to the car, I found a parking violation on the windshield. Apparently, it was a resident permit required area. The fine was $70.

Clearly I wanted to voice a complaint. Not just an expression of dissatisfaction, but to include a request to have the ticket put aside or waived.

It was time to use the 3-Step Complaint Formula.

So, I wrote a letter (an email really) to the head of the parking violations department with the following elements, in this specific order:

· Express the belief that the person to whom you are writing has the ability and willingness to be of assistance ... to help you with your problem.

· State, chronologically and without emotion (just the facts), the list of actions leading to the problem.

· Tell what you want to happen. What are you asking be done?

It's that simple ... and very effective. (And, yes, I had my ticket forgiven.)
