Tuesday, November 12, 12:00p PT, How do we rebuild trust in authoritative information sources?<https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/rebuild-trust-authoritative-sources.html> (WebJunction)
In recent years we have seen a dramatic decrease in trust in societal institutions including traditional news media, government, science, and academia. At the same, we're facing a barrage of online misinformation and new technology that undermines our ability to confidently tell truth from fiction. More than ever, we need to rebuild trust in authoritative information sources to allow good information to rise above the noise. Researchers from the University of Washington's Center for an Informed Public<https://www.cip.uw.edu/> (CIP) will lead a conversation aimed at understanding current causes of distrust and routes to rebuilding public trust in authoritative information providers.
Thursday, November 14, 2-3pm PT: Reference Services and Misinformation in a Crisis: The Case of Library Occupation<https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUpduuuqzMjEtx5MeyvQJIRE0qei5S5U31i#/registration> (Oregon Reference Summit )
Recently the University Library at Portland State University faced an unexpected upheaval: the occupation of the library by protestors, leading to a months-long closure of the building for extensive repair. Library staff opened up a pop-up library to offer services during this time, dealt with new kinds of reference questions, and worked to combat misinformation. In this session, the managers of reference services and access services will share the lessons learned from this kind of crisis, as well as suggestions for all librarians on ways to prepare for and manage the unexpected.
Presenters
· Joan Petit is the Manager of References Services and Library Technologies at Portland State University. She holds an MSLS from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
· Rose Bosely is the Manager of Access Services at Portland State University. She holds an MLIS from Emporia State University.
