IN-PERSON FACILITATION TRAINING
Since 2024, Oregon Humanities has presented trainings for staff, board members, volunteers, and program partners of Oregon libraries of all types (public, academic, school, and tribal). These trainings help people involved with libraries strengthen their skills in leading conversations about vital issues and ideas across differences, beliefs, and backgrounds.

Using the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence as a jumping off point, participants will learn about facilitation and reflective conversation, practice new skills and techniques, and learn to design and facilitate conversations that allow people and groups to learn more about themselves and others. These trainings and other programs are part of Oregon Humanities’ work called “Beyond 250”— “This semiquincentennial of the nation provides an opportunity to reflect on our complex founding and history, lift up under-told stories, and appreciate diverse perspectives about the past, present, and future of our nation.”

In 2025, Oregon Humanities will host free trainings<https://oregonhumanities.org/programs/services/trainings-for-libraries/> in Pendleton, Burns, and other communities to be announced.

ONLINE CONFERENCE:
Friday, Feb 28 (6:45 am – 3:00 pm) Big Talk From Small Libraries 2025<https://nlc.nebraska.gov/scripts/calendar/eventshow.asp?ProgID=24353> (Nebraska Library Commission)
This free one-day online conference is tailored for staff from small libraries - the smaller the better! Each of our speakers is from a library serving fewer than 10,000 people, or is directly partnered with a small library and co-presenting with the library. Topics range from technology to programming to new roles for the library. This event is a great opportunity to learn about the innovative things your colleagues are doing in their small libraries. Everyone is welcome to register and attend, regardless of how big or small your library. But, if your library serves a few hundred to a few thousand people, this is the day for you! For more information and to register, visit:

SELF-PACED LEARNING:

(Requires a free WebJunction account to enroll in the course<https://learn.webjunction.org/course/view.php?id=19>)
Invite new staff or volunteers to become a top-notch Dewey shelver. Best Practices for Hybrid Programming<https://programminglibrarian.org/learn/best-practices-hybrid-programming> (ALA / Programming Librarian) (recorded webinar, 30 minutes)
Using lessons learned from more than four years of hybrid programming at a research institution, Alyssa Denneler will discuss do’s and don'ts for conducting events in the campus and local community. Of particular note are considerations for planning your event, post-event documentation and wrap-up, and ensuring you have the tools you need to confidently host a valuable event for all involved.

Funding for this webinar has been provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as part of the American Rescue Plan: Humanities Organization Grant.

ADA Workplace Basics – Working Together<https://my.nicheacademy.com/oregonstaff/course/49762> (Niche Academy, self-paced tutorial, 46 minutes)
The most important assets in any library aren’t the books or the services—it’s you and your coworkers! All kinds of different people bring their skills and talents to the library, including people with disabilities. But while employees with disabilities are a valuable part of the library’s success, they often feel stressed and unsupported. They may have to deal with misunderstandings, discrimination, or even harassment from coworkers. Knowing about the workplace stresses and challenges of coworkers with disabilities can help you strengthen your relationships and the services you deliver together!

(Access is through the Oregon Library Staff Academy and is limited to staff/volunteers of Oregon libraries. Need access? Please use this form<https://www.cognitoforms.com/statelibraryoforegon/requestaccesstocontinuingeducationresources/> to request it!)

HIGHLIGHTED WEBINARS:

Wednesday, February 19, 11:00a PT: Brief, but Descriptive: Writing Effective Alt Text<https://www.nicheacademy.com/brief-but-descriptive-writing-effective-alt-text> (Niche Academy)
Adding alt text to images is an essential accessibility practice for librarians. A brief textual description used by screen readers, alt text should be present anytime a librarian uses an image, including in social media marketing, instructional materials and online guides, and websites.

Effective alt text can be tricky. How detailed does one need to be? Would context change the alt text? And if alt text is supposed to be brief, how does one describe complex images like artwork and research data? In this webinar, Melissa Wong will help participants learn to write effective alt text for different contexts and types of content, from simple social media posts to complex scientific and artistic materials.
