[Libs-Or] Deadline today for comments for Library of Congress re changing Gulf of Mexico Subject Heading to Gulf of America

Hi All,

The Library of Congress is taking comments through TODAY only (February 18)
regarding their plan to rename the Library of Congress Subject
Heading "Mexico, Gulf of" to "America, Gulf of." This is out of line with
cataloging best practices.

Comments on the proposed changes can be sent to listcomments at loc.gov by
Tuesday, February 18, 2025 (TODAY).

Hi all:

I'm forwarding this notice about LCSH Tentative List 12a (see below), in
case it's of interest to anyone. The list contains proposals to change
subject headings pertaining to "Mexico, Gulf of" to "America, Gulf of" (and
also Mount Denali to Mount McKinley). In case the link doesn't work when

Comments on the proposed changes can be sent to listcomments at loc.gov by
Tuesday, February 18, 2025 (which is *TODAY*), if folks have thoughts, or
want to raise concerns. I believe there's no stricture against
international librarians sending comments to listcomments at loc.gov about
this—it's not just American libraries only. And since the LCSH is used
around the world, I'd think international commentary would be pertinent and
welcomed.

Reminder that the deadline for comments is *TODAY*, despite the list having
just been made public today. So if folks have thoughts, they'd better get
them in fast, and share with others who can comment today as well.

A new LCSH Tentative List has been posted. This list contains proposals for
new or revised subject headings currently being reviewed by the Policy,
Training, and Cooperative Programs (PTCP) Division of the Acquisitions and
Bibliographic Access (ABA) Directorate.

The proposals on this list are NOT YET APPROVED and are not yet available
for use in current cataloging.
