[Libs-Or] Deadline today for comments for Library of Congress re changing Gulf of Mexico Subject Heading to Gulf of America

Hi All,

If anyone needs inspiration, here is what my colleague emailed them:

Having seen the call for feedback on the proposed revisions to Gulf of
Mexico-related LCSH subject headings, *I am writing to protest these
changes*. I am confident that the proposed changes are not only in
opposition to cataloging standards, but also harmful to library workers and
patrons in the United States and abroad. The goal of cataloging and
classification is always to make discovery easier for the end user- how can
this be accomplished if place names that are still in use both domestically
and internationally are removed from LCSH entirely? When has it ever been a
best practice to provide less context and fewer avenues for discovery?
These proposed changes are disrespectful to everyone, but most of all to
the Native Alaskan population who have occupied this land long before the
United States existed as a country.
