2025 National Day of Racial Healing – WebJunction: The National Day of Racial Healing is an opportunity for people, organizations, and communities to call for racial healing, bring people together in their shared humanity‚ and take action together to create a more just and equitable world.

NDORH was created by W.K. Kellogg Foundation in 2017, building on the work and learnings of the Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) initiative, to support a national and community-based process to plan for and bring about transformational and sustainable change, and to address the historic and contemporary effects of racism.

The National Day of Racial Healing is observed every year on the Tuesday following Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Read on for resources and strategies that libraries can use to encourage community participation in this year's National Day of Racial Healing, on January 21, 2025.

OVERDUE: Weeding Out Oppression in Libraries Podcast: Season 3, Episode 9: We STILL Need Diverse Books<https://diversebooks.org/> w/Caroline Richmond & Dhonielle Clayton

In this episode we welcome We Need Diverse Books<https://diversebooks.org/> (WNDB) board members and authors Caroline Richmond<https://www.carolinetrichmond.com/> (Executive Director) and Dhonielle Clayton<https://www.dhonielleclayton.com/> (COO) to discuss why it is more important now than ever to ensure diverse books are available and accessible to youth. Since its creation in 2014, WNDB has championed diverse books and creators, and has pushed back against the lack of diverse representation in youth literature, publishing and collections. Their advocacy efforts include, but are not limited to: mentoring marginalized creators, donating diverse books to schools and libraries across the nation, providing resources to diverse publishing professionals, and supporting educators and creators facing censorship attempts.

HIGHLIGHTED ONLINE COURSE:

January 6 – 31, 2025: A Librarian's Guide to Consumer Health<https://www.nnlm.gov/training/class/librarians-guide-consumer-health-0> (NNLM)
This 4-week, self-paced, online class (via Moodle) covers the health information seeking behavior of consumers and the role of the librarian in the provision of health information for the public.

HIGHLIGHTED WEBINARS:

January 8, 2025, 12:00p PT: Tax Time Resources for Consumers<https://events-na7.adobeconnect.com/content/connect/c1/1166535402/en/events/event/shared/1740555237/event_registration.html?sco-id=4078013684&_charset_=utf-8> (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau)
Millions of consumers can keep more of their money at tax time by using free tax preparation services provided by IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers. This webinar is designed for frontline service providers and program managers who want to know more about free filing options for the people they serve. As a result of this webinar, you will be able to:

January 16, 2025, 12:00 – 1:00p PT: Don't manage change—embrace it<https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/dont-manage-change-embrace-it.html> (WebJunction)
Trying to make changes at your library can feel overwhelming. Where do you start? How do you get people on board? What do you do when you encounter resistance? Change management plans can help, but too often they frame the change as a problem to manage rather than an opportunity to reach for a shared vision. In this webinar, you’ll learn strategies for effective, positive change-making and examine how shifting your mindset to center growth and strengths can help you positively reframe change. You’ll also explore approaches to leadership, collaboration, and power-sharing that meaningfully engage impacted groups and plan for and address change anxiety and resistance.

January 30, 2025, 12:00 – 1:00p PT: Building community connections by hiring for cultural knowledge<https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/hiring-for-cultural-knowledge.html> (WebJunction)
Staffing demographics rarely match those of the communities they serve. Learn how valuing specific knowledge, skills, and abilities during the hiring process can develop a staff ready to serve a diverse community. Hear from Cultural Liaison Library Assistant staff representing Hispanic and Tribal communities, including the results of their efforts to build connections with and share stories of these communities. Attendees will be challenged to reconsider some common hiring practices and how to make them more inclusive. Hear a success story from a library that identified cultural knowledge gaps and worked with community stakeholders during the job posting and selection process.
