LISTEN:

Getting Buy In<https://www.swinthelibrary.com/podcast> (Surviving the Stacks podcast, January 6, 2025 episode)
When libraries seek to add innovative programming or services, especially those that aim to serve vulnerable or marginalized populations, it can be difficult to get buy-in from decision-makers and stakeholders; without buy-in and support, these new programs or services can struggle and even fail.

In this episode, Beth and Jane interview Tonya Garcia and David Perez from the Long Branch Free Public Library in New Jersey (USA) about some of their library’s programs and how they successfully got buy-in. They have been successful implementing nontraditional library programs such as the Fade to Books Barbershop Literacy Program and the Fresh Start re-entry program, and were the first library in New Jersey to add an on-staff social worker. They share the strategies that have been helpful in their area and suggestions for other libraries seeking to gain support for new programs or services aiming to meet patron and/or staff needs. Available Now on Spotify<https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/survivingthestacks>, Apple<https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/surviving-the-stacks-podcast/id1755365890>, and Amazon/Audible<https://www.audible.com/podcast/Surviving-The-Stacks-Podcast/B0D8Q3HQWJ?qid=1720392172&sr=1-1&ref_pageloadid=not_applicable&ref=a_search_c3_lProduct_1_1&pf_rd_p=83218cca-c308-412f-bfcf-90198b687a2f&pf_rd_r=4PVVZFP3MJG8V9RSCTP4&pageLoadId=gya2SvO6nlO6jnIT&creativeId=0d6f6720-f41c-457e-a42b-8c8dceb62f2c>!

HIGHLIGHTED ONLINE COURSE:

Dealing with Difficult Situations<https://learn.webjunction.org/enrol/index.php?id=787> (WebJunction)
Public libraries are meant to be safe and welcoming spaces, but sometimes difficult situations arise that can affect both staff and patrons. In the new free self-paced course, “Dealing with Difficult Situations,” you’ll explore a range of scenarios, the importance of empathy, and techniques for de-escalating conflicts in the library. The course also looks at the importance of library policies and their role in empowering staff to establish and maintain appropriate boundaries with patrons.

Requires a free WebJunction account<https://learn.webjunction.org/login/index.php>.

HIGHLIGHTED WEBINARS:

January 16, 2025, 12:00 – 1:00p PT: Don't manage change—embrace it<https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/dont-manage-change-embrace-it.html> (WebJunction)
Trying to make changes at your library can feel overwhelming. Where do you start? How do you get people on board? What do you do when you encounter resistance? Change management plans can help, but too often they frame the change as a problem to manage rather than an opportunity to reach for a shared vision. In this webinar, you’ll learn strategies for effective, positive change-making and examine how shifting your mindset to center growth and strengths can help you positively reframe change. You’ll also explore approaches to leadership, collaboration, and power-sharing that meaningfully engage impacted groups and plan for and address change anxiety and resistance.

January 22, 2025, 11:00a PT: Copyright Confusion? Fair Use To The Rescue!<https://www.nicheacademy.com/copyright-confusion-fair-use-to-the-rescue?_hsmi=341410023> (Niche Academy webinar)
If you’ve ever been confused about whether or not a patron’s use of copyrighted materials can be considered “fair”, this webinar is for you. Definitive answers about fair use are tough to find, as most copyright decisions are determined by the courts. Yet, library patrons seek guidance about their use of copyrighted materials more frequently than sometimes the reference desk can handle. So, how do librarians provide appropriate guidance to their patrons without risking inappropriate giving of legal advice? Sara Wolf will give librarians strategies for helping patrons make their own use decisions, and solidify the foundations on which fair use decisions are made.

January 30, 2025, 12:00 – 1:00p PT: Building community connections by hiring for cultural knowledge<https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/hiring-for-cultural-knowledge.html> (WebJunction)
Staffing demographics rarely match those of the communities they serve. Learn how valuing specific knowledge, skills, and abilities during the hiring process can develop a staff ready to serve a diverse community. Hear from Cultural Liaison Library Assistant staff representing Hispanic and Tribal communities, including the results of their efforts to build connections with and share stories of these communities. Attendees will be challenged to reconsider some common hiring practices and how to make them more inclusive. Hear a success story from a library that identified cultural knowledge gaps and worked with community stakeholders during the job posting and selection process.
