Tuesday, May 20, 2015
1:00 p.m. CT / 2:00 p.m. ET
Approximately 1.5 hours (90 min)

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the average age a person is targeted and lured into sex trafficking is between the ages of 12 - 14. Despite what most people want to believe, sex trafficking of minors is a crime that plagues the United States. Participants will learn how children with sexual abuse histories are at a higher risk of being sexually trafficked and becoming victims of commercial sexual exploitation. Participants will also learn how Child Advocacy Centers, along with a multidisciplinary team approach, can be utilized to identify potential victims, respond to these victims and conduct forensic interviews of sexually trafficked and commercial sexually exploited children.

The Western Regional Children's Advocacy Center is hosting a Corroborating the Forensic Interview Training June 16-17 in Vancouver, Washington. This training is intended for MDT partners who work closely with a CAIC (this is a requirement for registration) such as prosecutors and detectives who investigate child abuse in association with CAIC interviews. I attended a one day version of this training at the Child Abuse Summit and the trainers were top notch. Please see the attached flyer for more information.

MDT Members may be interested in the May Multnomah County Family Violence Coordinating Council Update (see below) which, in honor of Mother's Day, focuses on ways of supporting mothers experiencing domestic violence as those mothers work to ensure the health, safety and well-being of their children. Additional resources not mentioned in this article include the projects funded by Safer Futures<http://www.doj.state.or.us/victims/pages/safer_futures.aspx>.

Supporting Moms Experiencing Domestic Violence

As advocates, counselors, police officers, lawyers, and other professionals we see daily the impacts of domestic violence on mothers caring for their children. We also see these same mothers working diligently to best ensure their children's safety and well-being. As we approach Mother's Day, it seems fitting to take an opportunity to recognize the moms that we work with and to brush up on strategies and resources for helping support them as individuals and as parents.

Consider starting here with an opinion piece published in The New York Times last summer, exploring why Two-Parent Households Can Be Lethal<http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/22/opinion/sunday/domestic-violence-and-two-parent-households.html?_r=1>.

Continue on by expanding your understanding of how to support mothers experiencing domestic violence with some tips from Promising Futures<http://promising.futureswithoutviolence.org/what-do-kids-need/supporting-parenting/>.

Take a dive into the complexities of child custody in domestic violence cases by getting the facts on custody laws and parental kidnapping at WomensLaw.org<http://www.womenslaw.org/laws.php> and reading up on the Battered Women's Justice Project's Custody Project.<http://www.bwjp.org/custody.aspx>

Don't forget to familiarize yourself with local resources to support mothers. Here are a few to get you started:

  *   The Safe Families Collaborative<http://bradleyangle.org/services/youth-and-family-services/> offers free and confidential parenting support services for survivors of domestic violence;

  *   Impact NW<http://impactnw.org/main-navigation/programs/early-childhood/domestic-violence-services/> has a long history in our community of offering programs to survivors who are parents.  Opportunities include a variety of home and community-based services, groups, and co-located advocacy with Gresham Child Welfare;

  *   Insights provides STRONG Moms<http://www.insightstpp.org/programs.html> groups for pregnant and parenting young women who have previously or are currently experiencing intimate partner violence;

  * The Baby Blues Connection<http://babybluesconnection.org/bbc/> is there to serve women and families coping with pregnancy and postpartum mood disorders with peer support and group meetings.
