>From Anne Seymour's Monday Missives:
An important study published by the University of Chicago with support from the National Institute of Justice, "National Survey of Teen Relationships and Intimate Violence," offers important findings on psychological, sexual and physical abuse of teens. Through conducting background research for State Victim Assistance Academy curriculum development, I keep running across little gems like the "Resource Guide to Trauma-informed Human Services" published by HHS' Administration for Children and Families, which features six key concepts that help make sense of an important issue in our field. This 3 1/2 day, comprehensive training teaches the Oregon Interviewing Guidelines Forensic Interview Structure, which is designed to gather the greatest amount of reliable information in a child-sensitive, developmentally-appropriate, and legally-defensible manner. The Oregon Child Forensic Interview Training is evidence-based, supported by current research, and approved by the National Children's Alliance to meet the Forensic Interview Training Standards. This training is typically attended by Center-Based Child Forensic Interviewers, Law Enforcement, and DHS professionals. Not sure if this training is appropriate for you? 50 Years Later: The Long Shadow of Childhood Sexual Abuse
Tania Abramson, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, is on an international lecture tour speaking out on behalf of victims by bringing attention to the life-long effects of child sexual abuse. Ms. Abramson's art explores issues of shame and self-worth as she extracts meaning from the events in her life. From self-portraits to conceptual projects utilizing commonplace items (e.g. sledgehammers and vintage telephones), to repetitive portrayals of the Abyss, her work depicts how severe trauma informed her worldview.

Victim Rights Law Center: Openings

Title:  Paralegal
Status: Part-time; Temporary; VRLC Oregon office
Under the supervision of VRLC staff attorneys, the paralegal will provide support to immigrant victims of sexual assault. The paralegal will be the first point of contact for immigration clients and will help two staff attorneys prepare applications for various forms of immigration relief. The paralegal will also conduct client intakes, translate client documents, and assist in other administrative tasks.

Description:
The Victim Rights Law Center (VRLC) is a nonprofit law center that provides free, holistic legal services to adult and minor sexual assault survivors in Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington counties, Oregon; to transgender survivors statewide; and to sexual assault victims throughout Massachusetts. The VRLC also provides national training, mentorship, tools, research, and resources for lawyers, advocates, and other professionals on the legal needs of rape and sexual assault victims. The full-time VOCA-funded staff attorney is a Portland, OR, based position.  The attorney will be responsible for providing legal assistance to adult and minor sexual assault survivors; helping to recruit, train, and mentor lawyers and law students; and collaborate effectively with grant and community partners.

Victims' Rights Law Center is Hiring for a full-time lawyer for their Portland, Oregon, office.  This 3-year, VOCA-funded position will join VRLC's legal services team, and be responsible for providing direct representation to minor and adult sexual assault survivors in the tri-county area. In addition, the lawyer will launch a statewide project both representing and providing assistance to pro se transgender survivors statewide who need help with gender marker document changes, for safety or privacy-related reasons.   (This component of the project also involves recruiting, training and mentoring law students and pro bono lawyers who will help us service trans survivors statewide.)
In addition, VRLC will be hiring 1-2 part-time paralegals for our Portland office!  We seek a part-time, Spanish-speaking paralegal with immigration experience available to start immediately. The Development Director position is a significant leadership position for Kids' FIRST Center and will work alongside the Executive Director, Deputy Director, Fundraising Committee, Marketing Communications Committee and Board of Directors to meet departmental and organizational goals and ensure that all department activities are consistent with the organization's mission, vision, and values. This requires the ability to think broadly and strategically about the Center's work, as well as to be detail oriented and organized about the implementation and structures necessary to move the Center's vision into reality.
