Workshop description:

In a world of increasingly complex clinical practice, play therapists need to be aware of their legal and ethical responsibilities. These responsibilities not only apply to children, but also to their legal guardians. This workshop will focus on legal and ethical issues that are unique to working with children, including confidentiality, informed consent, client records, and mandated reporting. Additionally, this workshop will include discussion of the Play Therapy Practice Guidelines published by the Association for Play Therapy. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to apply these practice standards through small group practice to insure quality play therapy practice with children and families.

Learning Objectives:

Following the workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Understand and apply ethical standards related to informed consent in the play therapy process.
2. Identify confidentiality in the play therapy process in regard to minor clients and legal guardians.
3. Discuss and apply ethical decision-making in regard to mandated reporting, client records, and consent in the practice of play therapy.
4. Discuss and apply ethical issues related to the Association for Play Therapy’s Play Therapy Practice Guidelines, as well as other organization’s ethical codes and state statute.
