Comment period extended for cougar management plan

SALEM - Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife officials today announced
the comment period for Oregon's proposed cougar management plan will
remain open through Nov. 20.

The announcement comes on the heels of the Oregon Fish and Wildlife
Commission's recent move to delay its decision on aspects of the state's
wolf management plan, at the request of several interested public
groups. Shifting the decision dates for wolf management issues spurred
ODFW leaders to adjust the cougar management plan to allow maximum
public comment and Commission consideration.

The proposed cougar management plan updates ODFW's 1993 cougar
management plan. The full text is available on the ODFW Web site,
www.dfw.state.or.us.
Interested individuals also can obtain a copy of the draft plan by
contacting any ODFW office. Public comment is welcome via email, or
through written correspondence to ODFW Cougar Plan, 3406 Cherry Ave. NE,
Salem, OR 97303.

Letters received by Nov. 20 will be provided to the Commission and
incorporated in the final crafting of the plan. Correspondence received
after Nov. 20 will be forwarded to the Commission.

Verbal testimony is welcome at the Commission's January and February
meetings. With the new timeline, the Commission will receive an
informational briefing on the proposed cougar management plan at its
regular meeting in January, and could make a final decision on the plan
in February 2006.
