Western Oregon elk hunters urged to buy tags before deadline
CLACKAMAS - The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife urges hunters
gearing up for first season bull elk hunts in the coast range and along
the coast to buy their tags before the Nov. 11 deadline, which falls on
Veteran's Day.
All state and federal offices, including ODFW offices, will be closed
for the holiday. Many license agents will be open to sell tags but
hunters who need to exchange a tag or obtain a duplicate tag are
required to conduct the transaction at an ODFW office during regular
business hours.
Saturday, Nov. 12 is the first day of a four-day elk rifle hunt in all
hunt units west of the Cascade foothills. General season hunts will open
in the Scappoose, Wilson, Trask, Willamette, Stott Mountain, Alsea,
Siuslaw, Melrose and Applegate units. Limited entry hunts will open in
the Saddle Mountain, Tioga, Sixes, Powers and Chetco units.
In addition, biologists ask successful elk hunters to bring their
animals to one of several check stations staffed Nov. 12-13 to help
monitor for chronic wasting disease. CWD is an untreatable, always fatal
neurological disease of deer and elk that has not been found in Oregon.
Voluntary check stations will be manned from dawn to dusk at the
following locations:
* U.S. Highway 26 and Timber Road;
* State Route 6 and S. Gale Creek Road
* U.S. Highway 30 and Clatskanie Hwy 30 at State Route 47
Hunters also may bring their harvested elk to any ODFW field office.
For more information on elk tag purchases, elk seasons or CWD, contact a
local ODFW office.
