Hi Ronda --

I have access to the 1920 census so looked in Oregon for Charles Howard
for you ... there were several. However, there is one who just might be
yours ... he was the only one in Oregon who was born in Kentucky.

He was in the State Penitentiary, Marion Co., Oregon, Enumeration Dist. 353,
Page 3A as follows:
Charles Howard, male, white, age 34, divorced, b. Kentucky, father b.
Indiana, mother b. Indiana

Maybe you can contact the Penitentiary to find out what records, if any, are
available and how to access them. There are many knowledgeable people on
the OR-Roots List, so perhaps someone can guide you. I don't know how you
can prove or disprove that this is your guy though. If you could find out
WHEN & WHY he was there, perhaps there would be a newspaper article
somewhere about the crime and there should certainly be a transcript of the
trial in some county court house or in the Oregon State Archives?? Perhaps
the character witnesses (if there are any?) for the defense could provide
some sort of clue?

Since he is 34 in 1920 he would have been born about 1886. An 1870
Kentucky census record for a HOWARD family (with husband & wife b. in IN)
with a 4ish-year-old son named Charles might provide the names of his
parents ... *if* they are still in Kentucky at that time.

I also looked for your Charles Howard in Kentucky in 1920. Again there
were several, but none in Carroll Co.

Good luck in your search!
      Virgene Travis

Subject: [or-roots] Charles Howard 1915 Lane County

We are looking for a Charles Howard possibly from Kentucky. He married
Rachel Brewer in Lane County Oregon in April 1915, but was long gone by the
date of their divorce in August 1916. His son John Brewer Howard was born
Feb 1916. The family story is that he went back to Carrolton Kentucky and
was an alcoholic. But I have no proof of any thing except the marriage and
divorce certificates, which are actually of little help since they have no
middle initial, no parent names and say he's from Lane County. I suspect he
was just living there at the time. I also wonder if he had another family
some where else.
Do you know anything about any Charles Howards? Do you have any ideas how I
might search for him?
Thanks!
Ronda Howard
