Greetings and Happy New Year to all,
There have been several remarks about the possibility that I might be
monitoring the list and "vetting" some messages recently. I have been in the
office over the holidays with the exception of Christmas Eve, Christmas and
New Year's day. On Dec. 29th when like so many folks in the Salem area I was
without power for about 14 hours and did not venture in to work. (When two
utility trucks go into the ditch on your road and the next day two Cable
trucks are stuck in the ditch and the following day the garbage truck has to
back down the road and chain up to reach you, you have a tendency to think
twice before venturing out in your little front wheel drive vehicle.) I have
been learning how to use the Salem mass transit system for the past week. Now
I have added my personal reminiscence of the winter of 2003-04! (On a
historical note I too survived the horrible winter of 1968 in North Central
Washington. I think we went to school two days out of the month of January.)
Anyway there are two items I want to bring to everybody's attention. Although
the software that runs the list does allow attachments, and apparently images
in the body of the e-mail, it will not allow messages over 40 KB. So there
were some messages recently that did not go through. That being said none of
the messages that contained images had those images in my e-mail version of
the list. Apparently the state's system takes those out because they exceed
the size limit that the state has set for email traffic. So to clarify, if
you had a message that contained an image or attachment that you did not see
posted the past few days, it was because it exceeded the 40kb size limit not
because I sent it into limbo. In regard to these large message also bear in
mind that there may still be some of the list members who are using older
machines with slower processing speeds and/or ISP's that limit the amount of
space they can have for email so this may be irksome to them at some point if
everybody starts adding images. ( Kinda wish I could have seen some of them.)
Second I was asked to clarify the subscribe/unsubscribe procedure for this
list. I know many people on this list may also subscribe to the Rootsweb
Oregon Genealogy list. (In fact if you ever feel like you may have missed
some of the messages for a particular thread, it may be because somebody is
responding to a post on the other list but has the message going to both of
the lists.) There are times this happens to me and I have to double check
that I am not drinking decaf.
So when you need to subscribe or unsubscribe send an email message to:
or-roots at sosinet.sos.state.or.us
In the message ***subject*** put either
"subscribe" (for regular version--without the quotes) or "subscribe digest"
(for the digest version--without the quotes).
You can also change you account to "no mail" if you are going to be away on
vacation and just want to suspend the list rather than unsubscribe altogether.
