On page 58 it mentions Mrs. Dorothy Bennet was Cottage Grove Hospital
Director of Nursing Service some time around 1960 to 65, the exact date is
obscure. It might be possible to inquire of the current hospital
administration about her, but doubtful as CG Hospital went bankrupt in the
1990's and only very recently has a new one opened. I have no idea what was
done with the old one's records.

The other reference is more likely to be from your family, a Reverend Bennet
was one of the first ministers of a Sunday School organized in 1880 at a
school house on Silk Creek. The book is a little vague about where on Silk
Creek.

If you're not familiar with the Geography of the CG area Silk creek is west
of town and the "community" is about a mile from downtown. Bennet Creek is
at the North West corner of town which would put it on the Creswell Side.

pgs 58, 222, Bennet creek gets mentioned on pgs 1, 23, 188

The page one reference mentions an apparent indian village on Bennet Creek
considering the amount of artifacts found there and that in 1970 there was
still standing a stump from an ancient forest that they hadn't burned, on
page 23 it mentions piped water to the city from Bennet creek began to flow
in 1892 and page 188 talks about an early brick kiln on Bennett Creek.

I find no Bennett in the 1880 Census in CG on the LDS site, which is a bit
strange since the book sort of implies, you might want to go to

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/searc
h_census.asp

(make sure the whole line is in the URL spot all the way to census.asp)

select US 1880 Census, type in Bennet and select Oregon for census state and
Lane county and you will find 15 individuals in four familys, the heads of
which are;	C. BENNETT, John BENNETT, Chas BENNETT and F. M. GATCH, the last
is the son-in-law of SF Bennet and his wife Anna who are living with him.

I would bet it was your Bennets the creek was named for, but they didn't get
credit for it in the book.

Could you see if there is any information regarding Bennett family who lived
at Goshen in Lane County. They came to the area in 1854 and lived there
until at least 1910 or later. Thanks.

Okay, I am being such a wise guy, we'll see if I can figure out how to do it
in Outlook express, I have to send this in html format which list Mom had
said wasn't allowed but which any number of folks have been using on a
regular basis.

When she get back from vacation she is probably going to be very cross with
us.

By the way my sister-in-law laid a copy of two Cottage Grove Sentinel
publications on me yesterday, if anyone thinks there might be info of
intereste to them I would be glad to check. I know someone on the list
mentioned in the past having a ancestor that was in the Bohemia Mining
District in the early days and that is the main reason I mention this;

Bohemia Gold: Bohemia Mining District
Lane County, Oregon
The Bonanza Years
1885 - 1910
by Ivan C. Hoyer

Golden Was the Past
1850 - 1970
Cottage Grove Oregon

 The Writers Discussion Group

As I understand it both of these are sold out, they only published limited
runs. This is about the fourth edition of Golden with the past though so if
folks are interested they can badger the Cottage Grove Sentinel and maybe
inspire them to publish more.
