Marilyn;

Not my Chapman, Dad's family were Johny-come-latelies, having only been in
Oregon about 100 years as of last year. That is probably Bob Casebeer's
family, if you check the archives I am sure he has discussed it. will browse
mine real quick.

Geez somedays I am dense, I just remembered to use find in tools menu in
Windows exploder, so much easier than opening half a dozen or so files and
searching through them manually;

This is from Bob, hope you don't mind my posting this here Bob, I would ask
first but then would probably not be able to remember who it was for.

Four Chapman men, one from Illinois (Andrew Johnson Chapman who led fifty
wagons
west in 1853), and three from Johnson county, Iowa with their wifes--Addison
B., George Jefferson, and John Henry Chapman (my great grandfather) who came
in 1854 settled here in Douglas County--
three of them near Glide, and one near Canyonville. Andrew Johnson left the
Glide area, moving east of Canyonville on the flats south of the river
between Days Creek and Canyonville, and later he moved just west of Wilbur
so his kids could attend Umpqua Academy and live at home. There are lots of
Chapman relatives in Douglas County. There was a W. W. Chapman apparently
not related who bought the old Fort Umpqua property from Hudson Bay, but I
know little about any of his descendants.
The Chapman men were all born in Gallia County, Ohio, their parents
George and Joycie Napier Chapman moving there from Cabell County,.Virginia,
where they spent some time, but the family was centered for many years
before that in Ripplemead, Virginia, near Pearisburg in Giles County, VA, in
the upper New River Valley. Many Chapmans of this line believe they are
descended from on Thomas Chapman who came to the Americas in 1610 landing at
Charles Citie, Virginia, about twenty miles upstream on the Jame River from
Jamestown. There are others who dispute that claim and trace their lineage
from a later Chapman in Culpeper Co, Va. The Thomas believers think the
Chapman in Culpeper was a fourth generation Thomas descendant. It was a
fifth generation John Chapman who settled in Ripplemead.

Now you really got me going though; Was Alex Hodges any relation to Monroe
and Rhoda Hodges who were two doors down from Elisha? Eleven household
further down the Census finds a Hotel run by O P and M J Jackson which the
Crook Co Historical Society or some such might be able to identify if it is
the same Hodges. Okay, forget that Alex is four households the other side of
the Hotel.

Going up the page, next door to Elisha is GW Barnes married to Ginerva (sic)
ten houses further up is an EF Barnes married to Mary. He is listed as born
in CA though so may not be same family? That brings you to the front of the
Prineville part of the Census. I was thinking I might find some more of the
Marks family while paging through but got tired of going down the line
before I ran out of Prineville. I think it may have been a bigger town then.

It was interesting as a student of eastern Oregon geography to page through
that list, The Prine Family, The Belknap family, a Miss Maupin and if my
memory was a little better I am fairly sure I saw one or two other names
that are important on todays maps.

I hope this is of some help to folks, the only possible Connection I could
have to these folks is through an ex nephew-in-law and I hadn't even thought
of that till after sending a note off list to Midge explaining that I wasn't
connected. I do have a number of Barnes folk married into various brances of
the family in 17th and 18 century back in Concord though. I don't have much
on them unfortunately.

Midge,

Since you brought up the Elisha Barnes family, you may be interested to know
that my Marks family is connected.

My GG-grandfather, Bluford Brookins Marks, was brother to Isaac Marks.
Isaac died in Indiana (or was it Illinois?). Isaac's family, including his
widow and children, crossed the Oregon Trail in 1853 as did Bluford and
family.

One of Isaac's children was William Marks, an "early arrival" to Wasco
(later Crook) County. He waas father of Ginerva Marks, who married George
W. Barnes, son of Elisha Marks.

I believe it was George W. Barnes who wrote an article in the 1905 History
of Crook County which mentions that Bluford Marks and sons came to the
Prineville area in 1869. The article also states, "Uncle BLUFORD MARKS took
up the place where JOHN CLAYPOOL now lives, and his two boys built the old
log cabin that now stands on that place; it was one that ALEX HODGES took
up." Does anyone know where this place might be?

Incidentally, Isaac's daughter Sarah Jane Marks (sister to William) was
married to Andrew Johnson Chapman, and they also crossed to Oregon in 1853.
Les, is there a Chapman connection here?
