Listers, an email came through last night asking about joining our little
group, I emailed them direct to point out that as far as I could tell they
had joined and they sent me back direct the purpose of their search so I
have put the following together along with my little "up on the soap box
blurb" about providing the list with as much info as possible when posting a
query which we all tend to forget from time to time.

I figure this is your guy since the State Fairgrounds are in Marion Co and
obviously this guy had land. In Jackson county we find a David of the
divorcing kind;

Presley, David A vs Presley, Minnie E 01-19-1900 Divorce Jackson County P03

Presley, David A vs Presley, Jennie May 06-27-1908 Divorce Jackson County

born September 16, 1826, in Ohio and with his father, Towner Savage, and the
rest of the family, moved to Schoolcraft, Michigan, where they lived a few
years and from there immigrated to Oregon in 1846. A more extended account
of Towner Savage and his genealogy appears elsewhere in this volume. John
Savage was but twenty years of age when he crossed the plains and no doubt
drove an ox team or herded the loose stock, to do his bit. In their
immigrant train were Sidney, Tom and Asa Smith, a family by name of Walker
and others. Oscar Williams was captain of the train. Four years after his
arrival in the Willamette Valley he married Rhoda Presley, daughter of David
Presley. They were married at the old Presley home, just west of the Oregon
state fairgrounds, in 1850, and went to live on their donation land claim
four miles northeast of Salem, on the Silverton road, in a log house he had
built several years before. After Rhoda's death, John Savage married Eleanor
Tarrant. As to his religious belief, John Savage was a Universalist and a
democrat as to politics. He learned the trade of blacksmith from John Bash,
one of the first men of that trade in Salem, Oregon. At the time they moved
on their claim, Mr. Savage said the native grass was so high that when his
oxen laid down it was very hard to find them, and the nearest flour mill at
the time they came to Oregon was below Oregon City, and it took two days by
ox team to make the trip one way. The children of John Savage and Rhoda
Presley were: Morgan, who died 1879, unmarried. Letitia, who married W. G.
Evans. Eliza, who married J. W. Brooks. George 0, who married Sarah Walker.
Ella, who married Prince Byrne. Hannah, died aged 3 years, in 1866. Alice,
who married William Martin. Etta, who married L. P. Gleason." From: Steeves,

Surname: Cannon, Presley, Smith
Looking for information on MARY SMITH CANNON/LEWIS W. CANNON who settled in
Marion County ca. 1849, along with DAVID PRESLEY/MAHALA WELTY PRESLEY.
SIDNEY SMITH/BARBARA PRESLEY SMITH settled in Marion County in 1853, moved
to Linn County with David Presley ca. 1860.

140 Years Of Smith History July 2004

1847 1848 Lewis and Mary Smith Cannon, and daughter Rachel, go to Marion
County, Oregon, on the Oregon Trail.
1848 David Presley and Mahala Welty Presley, and children,
                       including Barbara, go to Oregon.
1848 Sidney goes back to Oregon. Given the family
relationships, the
Cannon's, Presley's and Sidney, probably all traveled
together.
Thomas and Azariah will either go back with him or go
back in
                       1849 with Calvin.
13 Feb 1849 Sidney Smith marries Barbara Presley in Linn Co.
Oregon, then goes on to California, leaving his wife
with
the Presley's. They will have four children.

I see that the Salem Census taker in 1860 was a lazy twit, just first
initial for everybody on the page.

Trying to figure out what happened to Rhoda is a puzzle, there are three J
Savages in Marion county in 1870 none of them married to a Rhoda., DUH LES I
just checked her date of death, no wonder I can't find her in 1870 or 1880.
I assume the two male Presley's born in Missouri that show up in Linn Co in
the 1870 Census are Rhoda's brothers.

That is about all the damage I can do from here. Someone in the Salem area
could probably do more research there.

I am surprised there is no mention in the Blue book or online how the fair
grounds were acquired, specifically no mention of David, but as we see from
the Savage inscription it is close to the fairgrounds.
