For anyone interested, especially those at a distance who participated
in the "Indian Wars" thread, there was an item in today's Statesman
Journal (Salem) that Alvin Josephy, Jr., a noted historian with strong
Oregon ties and an influential advocate for Indian rights, died in
Greenwich, Conn. this past Sunday at the age of 90. He was a former
editor of Time magazine, owned a ranch in the Wallowas where he spent a
part of each year, and his book, "The Nez Perce Indians and the Opening
of the Northwest" made him a national authority on Indian history. He
was also founding chairman of the National Museum of the American Indian
in Washington, D.C. The book might be a good resource or at least a good
read.

Hope this is useful. I was unaware of the man and his works.
