[or-roots] Travel in 1878

 Some of my wife's paternal ancestors (surnames NICKELL and POSTON) came from Aurora, Hamilton Co., NE to Portland, OR in 1880. They took the Emigrant Train from Grand Island, NE to San Francisco with their wagons, stock and families. Then they traveled north by steamer to the Portland area. They initially settled in Eugene and took up a Homestead, then later moved on to Aurora, OR on the Willamette River and after the turn of the century finally settled at Lake Creek, near Eagle Point, Jackson Co., OR on another Homestead claim.
 Other ancestors, on her mother's side (surnames NICHOLS and STALLSWORTH), came west from Illinois and Missouri also by Emigrant Train in 1880 (picking up the train in Iowa) to SF and then took their wagons north to just south of the Oregon border and settled in Picard, CA (now a ghost town) near Dorris, Butte Co., CA, finally emigrating to Jackson Co., OR also after the turn of the century.

The Emigrant Trains were quite popular, as you could bring your family, possessions and livestock with you across the country  to settle in OR in a somewhat more comfortable mode of travel than just by wagon, albeit more expensive. Although, I seriously doubt we would find it at all "comfortable" to do so if we had to undergo that same mode of travel today.

By 1880 the Transcontinental RR of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific
was complete.  It was called by some the Immigrant train.  It started in NE
and ended in San Francisco.  One had to travel by boat from SF to Portland
or places North.   Some trains by 1883 came by way of LA to SF. 

There were a number of posters in the late 1800's giving the wonders of
the Pacific North West. and travel by a number or RR routes.

My People came from Minn. in 1880, and antother group in 1883.  The
latter group to get inland took a train from Portland south and then went
by stage coach or wagon to the area of Bayview and Waldport.

The 1880 group went from Portland to the area aroud Hillsboro by
coach or wagon over a corderoy road.  Wood rounds over dirt.

I have a question about travel to Oregon in 1878.  How many different ways
did people come to Oregon?  I am tracking an ancestor that was in Nebraska
in 1870 (1870 Fed Census) and was married in Oregon in 1876 or 78.  I don't
think he came out on a wagon train, but maybe via railroad?  I just need to
know what to persue first.
