I KNOW that you know that answer to this.  Does the phrase "Last Will  and 
TESTAMENT" ring a bell?  It's the Scot's version of Probate  Register...sort of. 
 Possibly the cross reference you mention would be to a  previous death of a 
relative from which the decedant had inherited.
