[or-roots] un thing - unspeakable Vanport

I subscribed to the Idaho list a year or so ago because I wanted to post  one 
query about one individual.  I monitored the list for awhile and there  was 
no response so I concluded that no reader had the answer to my  question.  I 
rather forgot about it because it appeared to be a pretty  inactive list.  Then 
came a flurry of e-mails about people and places that  I couldn't relate to 
and I realized that I hadn't unsubscribed...so I  did. So I prefer to think that 
the people unsubscribing from this list and  doing so for similar reasons.
 
My memories of Vanport are pretty faint since I was born in 1946, but my  
grandparents owned a house on Schmeer Road (next to where Portland Meadows now  
stands) and it was flooded at the same time.  I remember debris from  buildings 
that had floated into the fields beyond the house.  I also  remember being 
required to sit on a bed and not get down while my mother helped  my gandmother 
clean up flood damage in the house. I also remember looking  out the window of 
that same houe and watching a circus complete with elephants  set up the in 
the field.
