[or-roots] A Query

I think that the Walla Walla was a clue. That is where they got married
and she was living in Umatilla County at the time and in 1910 he was
living with his parents in Whitman Washington where her father was also
living. It is all very convoluted because her parents got divorced and
both of them remarried within a short period of time. I think she may
have met him while visiting her father (but that is just a guess).
Needless to say when she was 13 and pregnant they went to Walla Walla to
get married because in Washington at that time you didn't have to have a
parental consent, you did in Oregon. So, my guess is that they either
lived in or near Umatilla County, Morrow County or on the Washington
side.

I really appreciate your help.

Thanks again,

Dale

Dale,

The "Columbia River" takes up a great area. It could be Portland, OR or
Vancouver, WA. I live on the Columbia River in Columbia City, OR, right
across the river from Woodland, WA. There's also Kalama, WA and
Longview, WA. These are all cities along I-5 and not far from Portland,
OR.

Correction, my uncle is 91 so it looks like the little girl must have
already died by 1917 since it said he only had one child. I think that
is probably correct because my aunt Betty saw a picture of the two
children and my uncle was an infant at the time and she said the little
girl looked to be about 2 or 3 so she obviously died very young.

Noah registered for the draft 5 Jun 1917 at Walla Walla. At that time
he had a wife and child. Do you have record that he had any other
children?

He is in California in 1920 living with his father. He is listed as
divorced at that time.

He got permission to join the navy 25 Dec 1917 at Tracy California.

You might be looking in Washington for the death of this little girl.

Subject: [or-roots] A Query

I have only been on the list a few days and I think I know why some
people are dropping. Maybe they are new like me and haven't seen
anything yet related to genealogy.

I will try to do a query and I hope someone out there can help me. I am
trying to find a death record for a child named Verna Marie Hardwick. I
think she died sometime between 1915 and 1919. She was the child of
Noah Hardwick and Versey Venus Howell. She was born Sept. 11, 1914 in
Oregon, but I don't know where. I also would like to have an actual
record of her birth as this date was given to me by a volunteer at the
Blue Mountain Genealogical Society and she didn't tell me where she got
it.

This child is a total mystery in my family. The legend was that she was
drowned in the Columbia river by her father who had gone berserk. I
don't think I believe this story because I have found Noah Hardwick in
the 1920 census or maybe it was the 1930 living with a new wife and 2
children. He had a brother named Jesse that seems to have dropped off
the planet about 1919. I found him living (Jesse, that is) in Portland
in the City Directory of 1918. He was living with his brother's wife at
the time. Does anyone have access to early obituaries in Portland?

I know this is more than one query, sorry. I am just very frustrated
over this as I really want to know the truth.
