[or-roots] A Query

Gosh that sounds familiar. When I finally found my great grand parents
divorce (Venus' parents) I was shocked because I expected it to be her
that filed, but it turned out to be Thomas who filed against her for
desertion. There was a lot of juicy stuff in those papers. Actually, I
have found that wills and divorces give the most insight into what
people were really like back then. Plus you learn some things that no
one ever talked about. As an example, my father's parents got divorced
and there was a custody battle for my father. I never knew this and the
real shocker was that his mother lost custody of him and the court sent
him to live with his grandmother out here in California when he was only
3 years old. I always wondered why he was so close to his Aunt. Once I
learned this it all made sense. His aunt was 9 when he went to live
with his grandmother and you know how young girls are with babies. They
just bonded like something else. I learned all this by doing genealogy
and that is why I love this hobby. Plus I learned that my mother had a
sister she never knew about and that my grandmother had a first husband
that she never told anyone about except her mother who wouldn't tell. I
could go on and on but I'm sure I have bored you enough.
As for Jane she was Venus' grandmother.

So was this the father of Venus (Jane)? You say you found him in the
Washington census in 1819 or should that be 1920? Washington has a
death
index but the on-line index doesn't begin until 1940 deaths.
I got the divorce papers for my husband's great grandparents in Douglas
County, Oregon from the 1800s. Didn't get any genealogy information as
such
but he had filed after she left with someone else so there were lots of
personal details about what happened. She didn't show for the divorce
hearing but sent in some kind of deposition rebutting what he said.
