I understand what you are saying. In our travels across the USA we see
all kinds. After discussing it with my wife just now, our feeling for the
subject is, the older the cemetery, the smaller number of restrictions.
Most of those we see in area of Nebraska, Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, etc
have vertical markers of granite, marble, stone, & cast cement stuff.
Height is not an issue. However, Oregon is, by far, the most restrictive
area we have found.
Please note that Oregon does not have that many 'old' cemeteries per the
definition that we are using. At one time I did a cemetery search as a
college term project. My area was Northen Clatsop County. The
Columbia, downstream of Westport, then south to, and including the pioneer
cemetery just outside Camp Rilea. My assignment was to record all markers
with a date of death prior to 1900. This included around fifteen
cemeteries, and VERY through searchs. I think the final count was only
about 150 graves. Which was a good thing as I made a photographic record
of them all, two per 8 1/2 x 11 page [black & white]. The photos are
probably lost, however, a copy of the index used to be on file with the
Clatsop
Historical Society.
