If you haven't found the newspaper clippings at history.coquillevalley.org (click on old news files from this link), there are presently 134 webpages worth of clippings that you can search (about 20 typed pages to each web page). They cover primarily Coos county from around 1900, but there are a few other papers from other areas as well. Even these Coos county newspapers would run articles from other areas, such as the Roseburg papers of the time. While I wish every article was transcribed, or even that a comprehensive index was done for these papers, not so as yet. That said, the clippings that are online are indexed via the search option on these pages. I've found a ton of interesting stories and a lot of information some times - other times I've come up empty. I've always found a good story even if it wasn't the one I was looking for. There are other clippings on the Coos county rootsweb site that I hope to merge with these for an even more extensive list.

I just discovered this link on my Coos County web page. If anyone sees a
newspaper in a time frame they think they might have something they want
looked up, I would be glad to promise to look. I haven't had a lot of luck
actually finding anything, but I am getting better organized. Last planned
trip I had 8 or 10 pages of stuff I promised to look for with me and found
only a couple items of any interest, but ya never know.

 Glen;

It was called the plain dealer, I have an index of it from 1867 - 1874, I
can see if there are any of your target names listed, and I haven't
forgotten the stuff I promised you, just haven't managed to get near a xerox
machine long enought to do teh job.

The 1st newspaper in Douglas county, Roseburg was the Ensign and it started publication in May 1867. The the Plaindealer was started in March 1870. The the Ensign was sold and became the Pantograph in 1872 and then became in 1875 the Independent. In 1877 another paper began publication called the Western Star. Then in 1882 the Independent's name was changed to the Roseburg Review. After 1886 the Umpqua Herald started up and was the first in the state to be a semi-weekly. In 1888 the Review and the Umpqua Herald merged. In 1906 the Plaindealer was sold and became the Umpqua Valley News.

After the 1900's there are other papers but I believe the above gives you the information you needed regarding the Review.

All this information and more can be found in the History of Oregon Newspapers by George Turnbull. It's out of print but you might find it at the libraries.

My apologies; it seems the "Douglas County Newspaper Index 1867 - 1874 that
I have is in fact for the Plaindealer and the Ensign. Idon't see any other
names in the pages, though I just skimmed it.

I would warn those asking for look ups that the last person I did a look up
for found out his ancestor was a contentios sort, 3/4 of the entries were
for court actions.
