Last Rites For Sussanna Schrock
"Susanna Schrock Burkholder passed away at the home of her son Ezra

14 days. She was born in Ontario, Canada, March 13, 1842. In her early life
she was united in marriage to a Mr. Burkholder at Ontario, Canada, who died
a few years later. She moved to Kansas in 1876 and was united in marriage to
Isaac Lehman in 1877. Mr Lehman died in 1910. In 1913 she came to Oregon,
where she has made her home until death.
"Deceased leaves two sons and two daughters, Ezra Burkholder of Molalla and
Noah Lehman, address unknown; Mrs. Martha Lesher of Brooks, Oregon and Ida
Zimmerman of Newton, Kansas. She also leaves 23 grandchildren, 14 great
grandchildren and a host of friends and neighbors. She was a lifelong member
of the Mennonite Church. "Funeral services were held today at 2:00 o'clock
at the Hopewell church at Hubbard, Ore., with Rev. Fred Gingerick and Rev.
Henry Wolfer officiating. Interment was in the Hopewell cemetery."
They lived in Emma Township, Harvey County, Kansas in 1905 and owned 1/2
acre. Isaac M. Lehman bought the lot on July 21, 1900 (part of SW/25-22-1W)
75 X 205 feet, and paid $750. His widow, Susan, sold it to Anna Zimmerman on
October 7, 1911 for $800.
COMMENTS FROM GRANDCHILDREN
"Her oldest son, Ezra Burkholder and his wife, Ada, and their nine children
lived on a farm near Molalla. Grandma spent time with them and with us and
sometimes with the older Burkholder daughter and her family" (letter from
Edna Persey dated July 7, 1974)
Ina Lesher (624) stated that when Susanna stayed at there home, she "would
take her for a walk - she was the only one patient enough to do it, and she
would have to sit down and rest. I would then run home, and they would bring
the car to pick her up." She also stated, "when she talk to mother in Dutch,
the children had to go outside. Ina wished she could have learned Dutch."
(phone call on Oct 23, 1991) Note: Susanna, being from Waterloo Co, Ontario,
was Pennsylvania Dutch and grew speaking "Dutch". Oregon was not a "Dutch"
speaking community.
Oda Blanton (#622) stated, "Grandma Lehman lived with her daughter Martha
(apparently only part time because she also was with Ezra) from about 1915
until about six months before she died. She send the last six months with
her son Ezra. She was a Mennonite, and worn the little white covering they
historically worn (ref I Cor. 11:2-16). She spoke Pennsylvania Dutch, but
her daughter Martha did want her to speak it to her grandchildren. (per
phone call on Aug 25, 1991).
Susan never said anything bad about anyone.
