[or-roots] Canada-Flynn - Pickett

I have actually done a Mapquest on the house as I have the address from
Daniel's death certificate. I need to do it again now that I know how
to use the satellite pictures. I have heard that the town is very
quaint and would love to visit there sometime.

I think the Southerner's get a bad rap about marrying their cousins.
Look at all the European Royalty they have to marry a cousin to stay in
good favor. I read recently that the taboo about marrying your first
cousin is only based on if you have a recessive gene in your family that
could cause a problem (think Anne Boline with 6 fingers on each hand).

Thanks for all your time and suggestions. I will try the historical
society like you said.

Dale

Well, that sure makes sense -- I thought only the "southreners" did
stuff like marrying cousins. Sure did in my family.

Only suggestion I have is to check out the Stillwater, MN historical
society and see if they have anything. I was there years ago, on my way
to prison (oh, that should be "on my way to visit the prison" <G>).
Pretty town.

You can probably even find the house!

Good luck,

Pat

The marriage license doesn't give anything except the name of
the minister who performed the ceremony, their names and dates etc.

My thought is that Catherine and Daniel were probably cousins
and that is why he came to Minnesota. I have a lot of first cousins
marrying in my family so it wouldn't have been that unusual. Another
thing is that Flynn is a very common Irish name.

It wasn't Catherine's grandmother that was the Flynn, it was her
mother Genevieve. She named her only daughter after her mother.

Daniel came to Canada when he was only 6 from Ireland. This
would have been during the famine. Catherine was born in New Brunswick
and I think that Daniel probably came with his father whose name was
also Daniel Flynn. On his death certificate it gives his father's name
as Daniel but the name for the mother is "unknown". I suspect she may
have died when he was born and the family may have never mentioned her
name so he didn't know it or if he did, he never talked about her to his
wife or children. On most of the census I have seen it gives
Catherine's parents as being born in New Brunswick also. If Genevieve
Flynn the mother of Catherine was a relative of Daniel Flynn, Sr. it
might explain why he came to Canada first instead of the United States.
I know that it was cheaper to go to Canada than the US so that may have
also been a factor.

Since Catherine came here when she was only about 3 and Daniel
came much later but they both ended up in Minnesota because that is
where they married.

It is really frustrating to try and find these people. I have
tried every version of Pickett I could think of and just not luck.

Whoa! Are you saying that Catherine (Pickett) Flynn, wife of
Daniel Flynn had a grandmother whose maiden name was also Flynn? (I
found that my grandmother, who provided the information for her father's
death certificate, gave her paternal grandfather as "father" and her
maternal grandmother as "mother" -- so perhaps this is what happened
here).

What does the marriage license say?

Interesting that this family lived on Oak Street, Stillwater, MN
from at least 1880 to 1920. If they were married in 1875 (twenty-five
years of marriage in the 1900 census), is this where you found the
marriage license?

I've spent the morning searching the 1860 and 1870 census for
Minnesota for these folks, to no avail.

Yes, according to Catherine's death certificate her
father's name was Edmund Pickett and her mother's maiden name was
Genevieve Flynn. I know that she came from New Brunswick Canada but I
haven't been able to find anything on her parents at all.

In the 1920, the first date is the year of immigration
-- which is different for each of them, and the second is the date of
naturalization -- again, different for each.

So, based on this, you would look for where Daniel was
in 1891, and Catherine in 1875. Remembering that (a) this may not be
correct, and (b) Catherine would have been naturalized as a child of her
father, so probably no personal naturalization record. Do we know
parent's names?

A child, Thomas, was born around 1891, in Minnesota. So,
I'd be looking for Naturalization records for Daniel in the county
courthouses there. As to Catherine, we have to find her parents to get
this one.

What does the marriage license say?

Sorry it took so long to respond.

What I need to be clear on is the first date in
the parentheses the year they came to the states and is the year after
the NA the year they were supposedly naturalized? I have never been
able to find Catherine's parents or her before her marriage to Daniel.
I did find him when he was single and living with a family named Casey
when he was in his early 20's.

So here is what I found

Based on the date listed in 1920, which
indicates he was naturalized in 1891, and the fact that Thomas S. was
born in Stillwater in Sept of 1891, according to the 1900 census, I'd be
checking in the Washington County, MN for the naturalization papers.

I've only done one or two naturalizations, and
found them in county courthouse records, so am not the expert here.
Perhaps you could begin at the http://www.rootsweb.com/~mnwashin/ to get
some names of people and courthouses.

			Good luck.
