Midge;

That is part of the problem; we don't know when they came out. Now that I
review the facts it gets murkier, I remembered it as the whole family coming
out together, but apparently Milan Morell Melvin came out by himself or with
Joel Wheaton, who is married to a first cousin on the father's side. His
mother and Step-father are still in the midwest in the 1860 census as I
believe his sister also is. Milan is in Oregon by 1860 but marries in
Crescent City in 1858 to Mary Elizabeth Tack. I know that the Tack's
furniture came around the Horn, but whether they came with their furniture
or overland I also don't know, but I suspect they came around as they were
coming from Philadelphia. I don't have the Census pages for 1850 that I
thought I had, but I am pretty sure the Melvins are all together in the
Midwest in 1850, and split up as I describe above in 1860.

The sad thing is that somebody in the family probably has a lot of the info
I need, but they are unwilling to admit it for fear of someone suggesting
they aren't entitled to be in posession of it. So it goes.

Hi Les,

Do you know what year it was that your ggfather came out, and where in
relation the gold fields Del Norte CO is? I doubt very much that I can
help, but my gggrandmother's name was Susannah Glenn (Mrs.) Barnes and she
came out in 1950 (I think) to the fields in Northern CA. She was a midwife
and nurse of sorts later on in Prineville OR. In her obituary it said that
she had delivered almost everyone in town that was born after she got there.
I haven't looked to see what train she was on - guess I should do that.
Good luck - Midge
