Bea, I am going to try and use an answer I gave another lister to give you a
short answer to your question, so If something doesn't make sense, it is
because this was originally an answer to another question;
You asked for it;
Aliquot
Parts Sec./ Block Township Range Fract. Section Meridian State
Counties Survey Nr.
3 5/ 5-S 1-W No Willamette OR Marion
Remarks: LOT 3 OF S HALF OF SW
1 6/ 5-S 1-W No Willamette OR Marion
Remarks: LOT 1 OR SESE QUARTER
2 6/ 5-S 1-W No Willamette OR Marion
Remarks: LOT 2 OR SWSE QUARTER
Now I am sure the next thing you are going to ask is what the heck is that?
If you really want to know go to;
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/Visitors/PLSS.asp
but I will explain where this is, first what it is; it
is found in township 5 south Range 1 West, Williamette Meridian, what that
means is it is in the block of 36 sections, each of which are approximately
one mile
square that is found about between 24 miles and 30 mile south of and and
between 0 and 6 miles west of the "Willamette Stone" which is located
somewhere around Salem,[correction, I just looked it up, it is in Portland,
my
apologies to anyone who got mislead by that statement, I don't know why I
can't
remember where it is i know somebody in here gave me the exact location
once, but it is
in a park in the "Y" where Skyline drive branches off of Burnside in SW
portland.
just remember your high school algebra and we are talking X and Y axis
stuff, Y being the Townships and X the Ranges. anyway in that block[township
being 6 miles by 6 miles] section 5 and 6 are found in the
top row of the block and are four to six miles from the east side
of the block; kinda like this;
_ _ _
6|5|_| _|_|_

Okay, this is not making a whole lot of sense, I have mentioned in here
before that the Donation Land Claim act made a mess of the section, township
and range allotment of the state of Oregon, I had never looked that close at
the salem area before, I just saw section 80 in the course of looking for
Bea's ancestors. there are whole townships in the Salem area that are
impossible to recognize as such because none of the section lines are where
they are supposed to be, not even the range lines, which is what we call the
lines between townships.
what we should be looking at is something like this;
when it says S half of the SW it means you take the square mile that is
section 5 and you find the four points around the outside that are called
quarter corners because they are used to break the section into four parts,
these should be roughly half a mile from each corner, on a more or less
straigh line between them and the corners, then you run a line from each one
to the one directly opposite from it and you have broken the section into 4
more or less equal portions roughly a half mile on a side, you do the same
thing to each of those quarters and you get four "forties" which are roughly
1/4 mile on a side and called forties because on a flat earth they would be
exactly forty acres in size.
So back to Bea's ancestors homestead description, I should find in section 5
and 6 in Township five south Range 1West, Willamette Meridian that the SW
quarter [lower left if you are geospatially challenged] it should be at
least broken into two halves, the lower or S half belong to them, moving
west the Southeast of the Southeast and the Southwest of the Southeast,
section 6 would be the two forties directly west of the above. What I am
finding is a meandered lot in the southwest corner of section five that
looks to be maybe fifty acres, labled 5 and a block in section six postion
labled 6 that looks to me like it would add up to the rest of the acreage
claimed in the above description, coming from where section 8 roughly should
be is a block of property labled 50 [remember in the perfect world each
township has 36 sections] and what I am surmising is the record we find on
line is what they filed on, but someone with a prior claim had already
staked out the southeast quarter of the southwest quarter of section five
after a fashion. I say after a fashion because the lines around most of
that block have very little in common with the regular survey grid system is
that they are both on the ground.
As to where this is, go to Woodburn, get on Boones Ferry road and turn right
on Tukwila Drive to the end and look north, you will be looking at
approximately the middle of the homestead as I have interpreted it above,
actually at that point, unless the brown strip at the end of the street on
Google earth is new construction, yo will be just south of a ppoint on the
south line of the property some f to 8 hundred feet west of the southeast
corner of section six. If the Brown in new construction, you will be
standing practically on that corner and should see some kind of reference to
it around.
Oh, by the way, I believe you will also be looking at a golf course. What
has my curious up is whether the row crops growing between the fairways is
still being harvested or not??
Anyway if you would like a map or aerial photo of this it isn't that
difficult to do.

Subject: [or-roots] Aliquot Parts
Hi Les,
I am new to the list, and I must admit that I am a bit overwhelmed
at the number of messages that come through - BUT - I have
learned so much about Oregon in the past four days that it is now
my #1 read.
I am confused about aliquot parts, and would appreciate help to
find just where this land actually is. The patentees were James and
Ellen Casey. There were 3 aliquot parts, all in Township 5-S, Range
1-W, Willamette Meridian, Marion County.
Aliquot 3 was in Sec./Block 5. The remark listed was Lot 3 of S Half of
SW
Aliquots 1 and 2 were in Sec./Block 6. The remarks for Aliquot l was
Lot 1 or SESE Quarter. The remarks for Aliquot 2 was Lot 2 or
SWSE Quarter.
I also have a question. Is there a website that lists the names of the
various
townships? Example: What township is 5-S?
Thanks, Les, for your generous offer of help. It is appreciated.
Bea
