To make the letters stand out better, why not try something that will wash off quickly to darken them. I have used ashes on a white stone and baing powder on dark ones. Both can be brushed off the smooth surface of the stone, leaving the impressions more visible. Then the stone can be cleaned by nature (or brushed off with a light paint brush in the case of the ashes).

Subject: [or-roots] Headstone Maintenance & Pictures

       A year ago or so we had a discussion on how to take pictures  of Headstones.  Is there a manual or document that could help me prepare a  dim headstone (white) to be able to take a picture of the  engraving?
  
 I see that you have had quite a rainy period with wind and  Tillamook had a 500-year flood and the pics of Hwy 35 at incredible.   Wow  I hope everyone on the list had no problems.

 The time of day, and mirror to reflect the light where you get the best eye  appeal will get the picture at it's best, some do to color are hard ones, but  time of day seems to help, and time of year where sun at a different  angle.
