Mildretta Adams' OWYHEE CATTLEMEN 1878 - 1978 book is not indexed, and I
didn't spot the Stacey brother's brand right off.

BUT - I have a 1941- 1946 State of Oregon BRAND RECORD book, and it is
indexed. (My father-in-law was an Oregon Brand Inspector for many years.) I can't
find a "Stacey brother's brand," but I can give you more information if you
tell me which of the following names you want me to look up:
Stace: W. F. or William (both of Richland)
Stacey: C. W. (Salem); F. W. (two listings under Vale); J. C. & Ethel (Vale)

Mike Hanley's TALES of the I. O. N. COUNTRY is indexed, but I don't find a
Stacey in the index.

Okay here I go assuming you have the “Owyhee Cattleman’s Book”? If so
would you look and see if the Stacey brother’s brand is shown?

Glen,

Mildretta Adams' Dedication page in the Owyhee Cattlemen book says: "In
Appreciation I wish to thank my daughter, Alene Downing, for her help and
encouragement in putting this book together. To the many people whom I have
interviewed through the years, who loaned me pictures and helped in many ways, I
thank you. It would be impossible to name all of you." Mildretta probably
returned the pictures she used in her book to those she borrowed them from.

Sorry about that! Gerrie

Yes! the publisher checked with the Descendents of Mildretta, supposedly
there were none of her photos or manuscripts in her home when she passed away.

Glen,
Have you checked with the decendents of Mildretta, or did she have any? If
not, who would have received her estate when she passed away? You should
be able to trace this through probate records, obituaries, friends, etc.
It was a great find for us once to receive some old family photos from a
friend who recognized some of the people in the photos. The photos were
priced at a dollar for a huge box of them, and the box was in a antique/junk store
in Burns.
We had not had these photos in our possession before he found them.
Good luck on your search!
Anne

One bad thing on Mildretta's book Owyee Cattlemen, is no one seems to know
what happened to her things after she passed away, none of her manuscripts
were found, a number of people have inquired of the publisher about copies of
photos from the book, we are hoping they have not been thrown away but are
stored somewhere and hope to locate them, so that those who would like copies of
the photos can get them and the publisher would like to republish the book.

The Burns Library and Historical Socity are looking, as well as the Museum
at Murphy, and I have someone checking the museum at Grandview where
everything from the Silver City Museum was moved, I have also sent a letter to Mike
Hanley.

The Idaho Historical Society has nothing, that they can find anyway.

It would be a terrible loss to Genealogy and History if these photos and
data are lost.

I'm glad your ancestor has received proper credit in some history books. I
probably saw the Robie name when we took a loop tour of the Malheur Wildlife
Refuge last year and and went to see the Diamond area. My sister-in-law's
sister-in-law (that's not a typo!) works at the Diamond Hotel. The bird
museum there is wonderful, but not as well kept as it used to be. We stopped at a
store on that loop that has ranch related articles and lots of good western
books.

In 1980, my father-in-law gave us Mildretta Adams' book: "Owyhee Cattlemen
1878 - 1978, 199 Years In The Saddle." I just now pulled it from my
bookshelf & found good information on A. H. Robie on page 189, along with the ranch
photo. Eastern Oregonians will always be grateful to Mildretta Adams and Mike
Hanley for putting our side of Oregon down on paper for posterity. These
authors show a passion for our history.

My father-in-law, Don Stults was born in La Grande and moved with his
family to Jordan Valley in 1917 to homestead on the dry land high desert. The
last of that family sold the ranch a few years ago, but we had one fun family
reunion there some time ago, while all but one of the siblings was living. One
of the aunties said that 10 acres of Treasure Valley soil produced much
better than 100 acres of the Jordan Valley homestead. You can't beat the Jordan
Valley people and boy do they turn out for a former J. V. person's funeral!

That Murphy, Idaho Museum and book store is a good one. We went there this
year, and we couldn't resist buying Mike Hanley's newer book - it's at our
cabin now, and I can't remember it's name. Mike's other passion is researching
& acurately restoring old stage coaches. He drives them in parades and has
participated in wagon train recreations. Mike's an amazing guy.

Just to set the record straight, a number of history books for the area have
the correct info on the Diamond Area, I also have copies of the probate
records thanks to Sandy Flory, Oregon geographic names when the 8th edition
comes out will have corrected information about the Diamond Area and Ft. (Camp)
Harney also.

It's frustrating when history gets recorded wrong, especially about our
families. People quote poorly researched histories, without citing primary
sources, and they're trusted by people. We genealogists know to check original
sources, but it's hard to change written "histories." I don't know of any way
of setting records straight, other than writing our own family history and
incorporating our documentation. Even if we do that though, our books
wouldn't be read by very many people.

Glen should be able to obtain land records to prove his ancestor Albert
Hugh Robie was Mace McCoy's partner in the Diamond Ranch endeavor. I'm sure
I've heard the Robie name in connection with Harney County history before.
We've been to the Diamond area and we were pleased to learn from Glen how the
area got it's name from the cattle brand. There might be an old cattle brand
book in Harney County showing the Diamond brand and it's owners.

How can we correct mistakes in history? What do you listers suggest we do
with situations like Glen's problem? Gerrie

For all that may be interested the history on the Diamond hotel is not
entirely correct, Mace McCoy was a partner of my Great Grandfather Albert Hugh
Robie,Albert bought out Mace and was selling to Pete French when he died, he
was one of the men with Pete French and his cowhands when attacked by the
Bannocks at the start of that war, the Diamond was the cattle brand that Mace and
Albert Had and that is where the Diamond area gets it's name.

Glen, This link tells about the current Hotel Diamond at Diamond, Oregon,
near Burns:

_Diamond Hotel in the heart of the Steens Mountain and Malheur area of
Eastern Oregon_ (http://www.central-oregon.com/hoteldiamond/history.html)

You might write the owners to see if they can help you find the pictures
you desire.

There is also a museum in Burns that might be able to help you.

Hope listers may be able to help.

This past week I was in Idaho and picked up a book at the Owyhee County
Historical Society,

Titled "Owyhee Cattlemen 1878-1978 100 years in the Saddle" By Mildretta
Adams Publisher "Owyhee Publishing" Homedale Idaho, the book had a photo of my
Great Grandfathers Ranch at Diamond Oregon near Burns, (A. H. Robie Diamond
Ranch).

The Publisher and the Owyhee County Historical Society have no idea what
happened to the photos after Mildretta passed away and many people includeing
myself have inquired about copies of some of the photos in the book, all would
like to know what happened to the photos or if someone has them, I have
sent this same message on the Idaho Genweb, if anyone knows about these photos
contact the publisher or me, it would be a big loss to history and genealogy
if these photos are lost.

Mildretta was a Author and Curator of the Silver City Idaho Museum until
her death.
