Bonjour, Gerrie,
I’ll be happy to include your info in my files, and thanks for the
corrections which I will make in the Master List.
As for my book which is in the end stages of production ….it is a
Composite Journal that is a collection of excerpts from the 122 journals
and recollections I have collected of 1851 O.T. pioneers, arranged in
geographic order so as to take the reader along the trek in the words of
many who made the journey that year. I have not included any other
information about the pioneers in this book. However, I do plan to
eventually make available at some time in the future all of the one
million words of documents and background and biographical information
related to the 1851 migration. The bio section includes mainly emails
that I have received from descendants similar to what you have sent and
extracts from some bios I have collected. I’ll add your notes to this
section and I’ll be happy to add what you send about the Harpoles as it
relates to the Oregon Trail trip …. Send me your mailing address, if you
want me to add that detail.
Your, &c., &c.,
Albert

Dear Albert,
Thank you for sending what you have on the Oregon Harpole's. I see you
have our family's bare bones data. However, it was James Walker
Harpole's wife who died on the Oregon Trail near Baker City, Oregon, and
he returned east to marry her cousin, who helped raise his younger
children and they had more kids. William Pope Harpole did not return
east to remarry.
There's much more about the Harpoles, along with various spellings, in
the HARPOLE COUSINS book. I've found excerpts of this HARPOLE COUSINS
book online and people can order an updated CD of the book, which I plan
to do. Here's the address for this source:
<http://mysite.verizon.net/res736wu/>
http://mysite.verizon.net/res736wu/ This book tells which of our
Harpole family came in the 1851 Harpole Wagon Train. It also tells that
all of Wm. P. & Nancy M. Harpole's children were born in Pike County,
Illinois and they did come west with their parents. Our Nancy E.
Harpool/Harpole was only three years old that year, so of course she was
with her parents. Susan was eight and Paul was eleven when they came to
the Oregon Territory with their parents.
Our line comes from Nancy Eveline Harpool/Harpole, daughter of Nancy
Mary McMullen & William Pope Harpole, and who married John Milton Hagey.
They and their children lived mostly in Union County, Oregon. I'll
gather the rest of my sources to share with you and Stephanie Flora, but
it may take a while. When is your deadline to complete your book? I'd
like to get our information to you before it's too late. We don't have
any 1851 Trail Journals, but the HARPOLE COUSINS book does have stories
about the journey.
The PIONEER MEMORIAL CEMETERY website has obituaries and much other
information on all the Harpole family buried there. The website is:

t=H&end=I>
http://www.marioncountycemetery.com/brooks/groups/record_group.php?start
=H&end=I I just noticed the cemetery's notes for William P. Harpole
doesn't mention that their is a large family plot marker that says
HARPOLE behind the families individual stones. That large marker is
nearly covered with a shrub surrounding it however. Their notes don't
mention Wm. P. Harpole's Oregon Donation Land Claim number, but I see
you have that.
I've driven by Three Mile Island many times, where there was a Harpole
wagon train Indian attack. I assume that's what you mean by Massacre
Rock?
The Marion County Historical Society, in 1975-1976, reprinted the
ILLUSTRATED HISTORICAL ATLAS MAP of MARION and LINN COUNTIES OREGON, by
Edgar Williams & Co., originally published in 1878. This book lends a
lot of light to our Oregon pioneers, including the Harpoles, and our
Hagey family as well. This book shows town plats with owners' names
clearly shown.
I respect Stephanie Flora's website, as she is a very good researcher.
However, you'd be much safer referring to primary and/or secondary
printed sources rather than individual people, like me. I will gather
more sources for you about the Harpole family and get back to you. I am
willing to correspond with other Harpole/Harpool researchers.
Respectfully, Gerrie Stults
