[or-roots] Adoption Records

Many times in years gone by adoptions were not "formalized".  My great-grandfather was "adopted" and raised by the Little's who moved from Kansas to CA and then Coquille, Oregon.  All of his school records say Novia Little.  When he went to get married they told him he might want to go by his birth name, Novia Landreth (1876-1961).  Actually they had changed his first name but he kept the name he grew up with for a first name.  He was never formally adopted.  I have not yet been able to learn if his sister (Floy Little b. 1881 Oregon) was adopted or whatever became of Floy.  Anyone with clues or ideas is welcome to make suggestions.  I have a photo of the Thomas & Annie Little Family from the 1890's.  Thomas P. Little is the father who has been illusive to find after 1900.

I have another friend who was "adopted" in the 1940's I believe - it was never formal either.  He was never told he was adopted and didn't find out until he was in his 50's.  I think that will be less common in that time period.

Just tonight I was working on the family of Frederick W. Folsom and he has an "Adopted daughter" Nellie C. b Mar 1876 Oregon.  She is clearly listed in census as an orphan (1880), adopted dau (1900), adopted dau (1910) but I doubt I'll ever find any legal papers for the adoption.

  I would like to know if there's a resource to see if old adoption records are online. Do you know? 

  My ggrandparents raised their niece as if she was their own, even giving her their last name (Bachelder). She was born Frances Boyd on Feb. 25, 1923 to Earl Wayne Boyd (my ggrandmother's brother), possibly out of wedlock. 

  I don't know if she was born in Oregon (where gg lived), California (Earl married Winifred Helliker in Calif about 1924), or Indiana (Earl's birthplace).
