[or-roots] Whitman County, Washington

That makes sense. My ggg many times great grandfather just pulled up stakes after successfully having a farm near Scio and moved to Hardman to be a teamster. His kids went on to Columbia County WA and Idaho and even Alaska. They were definitely into continuously improving their lot.

This is what I know. Along about 1860 or so, (maybe earlier) the mines opened up in eastern Oregon and Idaho. Many men took to transporting goods to the mines, others went to work in the mines.

Originally, from the Willamette, they took goods up to the Columbia, then up the Columbia to the Snake, and northeast from there.

Later, the “road” through the Cascades cut off quite a lot of the journey – the McKenzie route.

I don’t know if the article I attached will come through. It says:

“Pack trains are now passing through, or leaving here, almost every day for the mines. Mr. George Parks, of Douglas county, left here on Monday, with several animals, for the upper country, where he has a train that he used between Lewiston and Bannock last summer. Others have passed through during the week. >From present appearances it will be but a very short time till the McKenzie route will be open to travel. Persons passing through will then fit out here, instead of at the Dalles, and save two hundred miles travel, and much unnecessary expense.”

The above was in the Oregon State Journal, in 1864. George was my 3ggrandfather. His wife, Cynthia was sister to the Andrew Jackson Richardson we’ve been talking about here.

In their case, the story is that GBW (George) saw the base of Steptoe Canyon, on the Snake (it wasn’t called that at the time, of course) during one of these journeys, and decided it would be a great place for an orchard.

In all, three siblings joined, plus spouses of children and their siblings….and it goes on.

I have noted quite a number of names from the early Linn County families in Whitman, Asotin, Walla, Walla, Nez Perce and the other counties along the Snake. It would be interesting to do a “socio-gram” on the group.

I wonder if anyone has looked into the history of Whitman County to try to figure out what the attraction was. Was there gold there? Or some other industry to cause people to move up there. I too had a great grandfather that went there from Umatilla County, Oregon.

Like Denise, I have had Oregon families go to Whitman Co., WA, but I also have some that were there a little earlier than that. Some stayed; some came on to Oregon.

If you are doing Whitman Co., WA research, be sure that you take a look at the Washington Digital Archives: http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/Default.aspx

I have noticed that quite a number of my "Oregon" families migrated up into
Whitman County (1880's-1900's). It is interesting to see the migration
patterns for time periods.
