FYI to all
Genealogybank.com has the following newspapers (not all of them, of course, but a whole bunch).
Eugene, the Oregon State Journal, 1864-1880
Lakeview, the State Line Herald, 1879-1880
Portland, The Democratic Standard, 1854-1859, New Age, 1900 and Portland New Age, 1900-1907, Oregonian, 1861-1987,
I did look for Verna Hardwick, Dale, but didn’t find anything like that.
I also looked her up in the Ancestry.com site. No results there either. We know there was an influenza epidemic (the “Spanish flu”) around 1918, but that’s a little late for what you’re talking about.
>From GenealogyBank, I find that there was a Typhoid epidemic in Centralia in 1914, and a measles epidemic at Warm Springs. Diphtheria “raged” at Brooks, and in Washington County. In 1916 there was a fear of a Diphtheria epidemic in Baker. In 1916 also, there was great concern about “infantile paralysis” (Polio). (and for the next fifty years!)
I have a whole bunch who died around 1878, in Marion County, of Diphtheria, within a week of each other.

Subject: Re: [or-roots] Oregon death index lookup
Since I don't know the exact year or date of my aunt's death but know that it was sometime around 1914 or 1915 and she was a child. Is there anyway of knowing if there was some sort of epidemic in that time frame in Portland? I know she is buried in the old pioneer cemetery in Portland and I have contacted them but they only have a record of her being buried there with two of her siblings and a step mother (all in the same area).
I would really like to know the date of her death and what she died from but can't find a death record.
Her name was Verna Marie Hardwick and her parents were Noah Hardwick and Venus Howell.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
