TAMASTSLIKT TO CELEBRATE ITS 10th ANNIVERSARY

Traditional games, birthday cake and free admission to the museum
exhibits will be a part of the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute's 10th
anniversary celebration on Aug. 23.

Tamastslikt's current exhibits include "River of Memory: The
Everlasting Columbia." On display until Sept. 26, this exhibit includes
more than 90 historical photographs that capture the river as it once
appeared. This visual record is complemented with the words of early
explorers, surveyors and naturalists who wrote about specific places
along the river. The River of Memory exhibit expresses the significance
of the Columbia River through poetry, artwork, prose, and photography.
The river is depicted with large-format photographs, life size silk
fishes, soundscapes, reading, and text by native authors such as
Elizabeth Woody and Gloria Bird and renowned poets, Theodore Roethke
and
William Stafford, among others.

"To Indian people, the Columbia River is the center of existence, but
do we really know the river? We see it often. It's familiar to us. But
until you see this exhibit, you can*t say you truly know the Columbia
River," said Susan Sheoships, education coordinator at Tamástslikt.

Also on exhibit is the tribal art show "Here Forever." It features work
of tribal artists depicting their homeland.

Tamástslikt Cultural Institute is located on the grounds of the
Wildhorse Resort and Casino, 10 minutes east of Pendleton. From
Interstate 84 take exit 216 and follow the signs five minutes to
Wildhorse Resort and Casino and the museum. For more information,
