Help us Fill in the Blanks-
Learn Field Archaeology at a Clovis Site!

Enroll in the 2009
University of Oregon Archaeology and Geoarchaeology
Field School at the Sheep Mountain Clovis Site (35HA3667)
June 22 - July 31

Sheep Mountain is located near the northwestern edge of the Harney
Basin in southeastern Oregon. The site has produced Clovis points among
other artifacts and most stratified deposits are buried under a thin
layer of Mazama ash (ca. 7500 BP). Excavations at Sheep Mountain will be
the focus of the 2009 field school investigations, but work will also
occur at other sites. Archaeology field school students will learn Phase
1 (survey), Phase 2 (test excavation), and Phase 3 (data recovery)
methods, as well as mapping, record-keeping, and artifact cataloguing.
Those who sign up for the geoarchaeology field school taught by William
Lyons, Ph.D., will learn various techniques of sediment analysis and
other aspects of geomophological site investigation. Upon completion of
field school and bachelor*s degree requirements, students are
competitive for Forest Service or BLM employment at the GS 5-7 level or
prepared for an advanced phase of academic endeavor. The Sheep Mountain
site provides a rare opportunity to train on one of the oldest sites in
Oregon,
recovering artifacts that were crafted at the Pleistocene/Holocene
transition. Join us for what promises to be an exciting field season!
