Learn Field Archaeology at Paisley Caves!
Enroll in the 2009
University of Oregon Archaeology Field School
at the internationally recognized Paisley Caves (35LK3400)
June 22 - July 31

The Paisley 5 Mile Point Caves field school, located in Paisley near
Summer Lake in the Chewaucan
Basin, will continue investigations at this famous site from which the
oldest human remains (coprolites with human DNA in them) in the Western
Hemisphere have been recovered. Radiocarbon dating of Camelops hesternus
bones, such as the thoracic vertebra held by this student, and human
coprolites to roughly 12,300 BP (14,300 calibrated years) firmly
establishes their contemporaneity and the pre-Clovis age of the site.

Students will learn excavation techniques, to draw stratigraphic
profiles, and how to recover coprolites and other specimens without
contaminating them with modern DNA. They will join other UO students to
learn archaeological survey techniques.

The UO Northern Great Basin Archaeological Field School offers 8 credit
hours for a 6 week course beginning June 22nd and coming home July 31st,
2009.
