POSITION: Archaeologist III
SALARY: $55,785.60 (less 5% during probation)
REPORTS TO: History/Archaeology Program Manager
LOCATION: Nespelem, Washington

BASIC FUNCTIONS: The Archaeologist III is a professional level position
in the History/Archaeology Program. The position will entail both office
and field work. The incumbent will prepare scopes of work and budgets
for projects. The incumbent will conduct archaeological fieldwork (i.e.,
survey/inventory, evaluative testing, mitigation/treatment activities)
on a project-by-project basis. 

The incumbent in this position is expected to have experience in all
phases of archaeological projects and understand site recording,
mapping, photography, and site interpretations. Experience using GPS and
GIS technology, graphic programs, and either lithic analysis or
historical artifact analysis is preferred. The ability to identify human
remains (as opposed to faunal remains) is preferred. Incumbent will
conduct documentation of archaeological sites, including site mapping,
preparation of all field forms, screening of artifacts during testing
projects, and post-field artifact processing. 

The incumbent will assist in report preparation following the end of
fieldwork.  Incumbent may serve as a Field Director or Crew Chief on
specified projects if necessary. Incumbent will review Section 106
compliance letters and documents. May be required to supervise or assist
in the training of less experienced staff in field procedures and
methodologies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education and Training):

Must meet the Secretary of Interior standards for an Archaeologist:

· Master of Arts degree in Anthropology or a closely related field
(i.e., History, Archaeology, Cultural Resources Management), AND 4 years
archaeological field experience in prehistoric archaeology with an
emphasis in CRM contract work, and two of which must be at a supervisory
level. (Transcripts required)
· Must understand and be able to represent the cultural interests of
the CCT when needed and at the direction of the Program Manager;
· Must have an active understanding of anthropological ethics,
including an ability to respect and support the sovereignty of the
Colville Confederated Tribes;
· Must participate as a member of a cultural resources technical team
in protecting the rights of the Tribes; 
· Must recognize that all products produced as a result of research
projects are the sole property of the Colville Confederated Tribes;
· Ability to respect traditional tribal standards for personal
interaction;
· Must exhibit professional behavior during all encounters with other
tribal employees and agency staff;
· Must be willing to become a certified boat operator for reservoir
fieldwork;
· Must be willing to work in occasionally strenuous working and weather
conditions;
· Must be able to get along with coworkers and take direction from
supervisors;
· Must be able to work in rough terrain;
· Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds;
· Must have appropriate fieldwork attire (hat, gloves, work boots,
etc.);
· Must be willing to work nonstandard work schedules (e.g., 10 days on,
4 days off);
· Must be able to travel out of the area for overnight stays as
dictated by the field work;
· Must have a history of good work attendance, be punctual and have
reliable transportation;
· Must adhere to strict confidentiality;
· Must be comfortable in the presence of human remains;
· Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License and be eligible
for the Tribes’ vehicle insurance.

RECRUITING INDICATORS (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):
· Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of cultural resources laws and
regulations;
· Familiarity with the process of implementing Section 106 of the
National Historic Preservation Act as described in 36CFR800;
· Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of cultural resources
management;
· Knowledge of the methods, principles, and techniques associated with
the archaeological profession and experience in conducting various CRM
tasks including crew organization, logistics, orienteering, site
documentation, and artifact processing;
· Knowledge of standard archaeological equipment and techniques
required;
· Must be able to demonstrate knowledge in the culture history of the
CCT;
· Must be able to demonstrate knowledge in the geography of the Upper
Columbia River;
· Proven ability to work independently and under deadline;
· Proficiency with field equipment (cameras, mapping instruments, GPS
equipment);
· Familiarity GIS technology;
· Availability for emergency response to burial discoveries;
· Must have experience with archaeological collections (e.g., postfield
materials processing, preparation of artifacts for curation, database
management);
· Must be proficient with standard field techniques associated with
survey, excavation, and preparation of paperwork;
· Ability to use GPS equipment and other field equipment;
· Must be able to demonstrate experience using computers and computer
software; MSWord 8.0 or higher, MSAccess 8.0 or higher and MSExcel;
· Must be able to produce and maintain spreadsheets and a database;
· Ability to learn computer graphics;
· Must have the experience or ability to conduct background research;
· Must be able to demonstrate writing abilities and assist in the
preparation of project reports;
· Must be able to type professional letters and/or memoranda’s;
· Must be willing to work on tedious tasks such as photocopying
documents;
· Must be able to multitask and perform tasks in a timely manner and
meet deadlines;
· Must have good organizational skills;
· Ability to communicate effectively verbally or in writing;
· Ability to maintain emotional stability under stressful situations;
· Ability to work independently after initial training development;
· Ability to maintain high degree of patience;
· Ability to maintain respect for all human beings;
· Ability to maintain good judgment and common sense.

GIVEN TO HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERANS WHO ARE MINIMALLY QUALIFIED
WITHIN EACH INDIAN PREFERENCE CODE.
