Hanford Archaeologist
Salary: Range 58 ($4,114-5,395 per month)

The Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP) is
seeking to fill the position of Hanford Archaeologist, located in
Olympia Washington.

The Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation is Washington
State’s primary agency with knowledge and expertise in historic
preservation. We advocate for the preservation of Washington’s
irreplaceable historic and cultural resources - significant buildings,
structures, sites, objects and districts -
as assets for the future. Through education and information, we provide
leadership for the protection of our shared heritage.

DUTIES:
This position functions as the State’s expert in archaeology as it
relates to projects at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Richland,
Washington. The selected candidate will be responsible for administering
and making independent decisions on all Section 106 reviews as they
pertain to affects on prehistoric and
historical-period archaeological sites and historic properties. The
selected candidate will make concurrence determinations of eligibility
for the National Register of Historic Places, make concurrence
determinations of effect for Department of Energy funded and permitted
activities and will work closely with Native American Tribes on Tribal
concerns. The selected candidate should be able to apply mediation
skills in situations involving disputing parties. The selected candidate
may also conduct field assessments of archaeological sites if they are
accidentally disturbed by Hanford construction or development
activities. The selected candidate will also provide technical expertise
to archaeologists, agency personnel, Tribal representatives, and
industry to ensure protection or removal of cultural resources.

This position is a 2-year project position.

Travel may take up to 40% of the time and includes field visits and
meetings in the Tri-Cities and at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.

REQUIREMENTS
Eligible applicants must have a Master’s degree with major emphasis
in Archaeology or Anthropology and meet federal and state standards for
a professional archaeologist. Also required is at least two years of
professional archaeology field experience which includes project
management, testing, and evaluation of archaeological sites, familiarity
with the archaeology of Washington, and knowledge of Section 106 and
implementing regulations 36CFR 800; general knowledge of and familiarity
with National Historic Preservation Act programs and related standards
and guidelines with advanced experience and understanding of guidelines
and procedures for nominating and listing properties in the National
Register of Historic Places. Experience working with GIS and databases
preferred. 
Possession of a valid Washington State Driver’s License is required.
