Marine Board Seeks Public Comment on Proposed Rules for Waldo Lake

The Oregon State Marine Board has opened a public comment period for a
proposed rule to ban motorboats and float planes on Waldo Lake in Lane
County.  The proposed rule will implement the U.S. Forest Service’s
plan to create the largest motor-free lake in Oregon.  Waldo Lake is
6,298 acres in size and sits near the crest of the Cascade Mountains at
an elevation of 5,414 feet.  

When adopted, the rule would prohibit all motorized boating and also
prohibit float planes from operating on the lake.  Sailboats with
auxiliary motors would also be prohibited.  Electric motors would be
allowed.  An existing state law limits boat speed to 10 mph.

In addition to seeking written comment, the Board has scheduled two
public hearings.  The first hearing will be held on November 23 at the
Lane County Public Works office, 3040 N. Delta Hwy. in Eugene, at 6 p.m.
 The second hearing will be held on December 10 at the Bend Fire and
Rescue Training Center, Classroom 1, 63377 Jamison Rd. in Bend, at 6
p.m.

Written comments will be accepted until December 15, 2009 at 5 p.m. 
Comments may be submitted by mail to June LeTarte, OSMB, PO Box 14145,

(503) 378-4597.  Written comments may also be handed in at the public
hearings.  All comments must be received or postmarked by December 15. 
Telephone comments will not be accepted.

The Board is expected to decide on the rule at its January 2010
meeting.
